R-Truth has responded to Paul Levesque’s claim that the popular performer was never fired during the 2025 contract controversy that briefly took him off WWE television.

The situation is covered in season 2, episode 2 of ‘WWE: Unreal’, Netflix’s behind-the-scenes docuseries that returned on January 20.

In footage from the show, Levesque claims that Truth was never actually fired, but that the company let the contract expire in an effort to restart stalled negotiations. “Contrary to prior belief, he was never not under contract with us,” Levesque said.

Appearing on ‘The Breakfast Club’ on Wednesday, Truth said the practical reality matched what wrestlers and fans would call a release.

He recalled being told his deal would not be renewed with a week left on the contract, then asking whether he should report to work and being told not to come in. “There was no flight, no calendar,” he said, adding, “It felt like a firing to me.”

Truth also noted the process differed from prior negotiations because he used an agent for the first time and stayed out of the back-and-forth. He said he never felt angry, but the call left him “at a loss for feeling,” and he posted publicly because he felt he owed fans a thank you after such a long run.

Truth announced on June 1, 2025, that WWE was not renewing his contract, which sparked “We Want Truth” chants across multiple shows.

Less than a week later, he returned at Money in the Bank in Inglewood, California, interfering in the main event and helping Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso defeat John Cena and Logan Paul.

Now 54, Ron “R-Truth” Killings has worked for WWE across two stints and became one of the company’s signature comedy acts, while also holding titles including the United States Championship and tag team gold. Before his WWE run, he wrestled in TNA as Ron Killings and became the first recognized Black NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

Truth said the aftermath of the contract scare left him feeling more popular than ever, and he added that his new deal has allowed WWE to support his music efforts. He released a 2025 country/hip-hop album titled ‘The White Album’.
