Averno captured gold in Korakuen Hall today.

The lucha vet ended the 1,118-day reign for Atlantis Jr. as CMLL’s World Historic Light Heavyweight Champion on Thursday night, beating him in the co-main event of Fantastica Mania Night 6 in Tokyo, Japan.

In a performance that went nearly 20 minutes, Averno put away Atlantis Jr. with a calf crusher. The submission only emerged after Averno scored a trio of Angel’s Wings, including one off the middle rope.

Despite entering as the rudo, Averno gave his props to Atlantis Jr. after the match, raising his hand. Atlantis Jr. returned the favor by personally putting the title around Averno’s waist.

Atlantis Jr. first earned the title back in 2023, dethroning Stuka Jr. While he had previously defended against Averno in a three-way, Thursday was Atlantis Jr.’s first time meeting him in a one-on-one title bout.

Their sole past singles matchup saw Averno beat Atlantis Jr. in a two-out-of-three falls match last July.

The night was headlined by a stellar 17-minute showdown which saw Mascara Dorada overcome Hechicero in singles action. Dorada put away Hechicero with a Tijeras Driver followed up by a Shooting Star Press off the top rope. The highlight of the match was Dorada scaling NJPW’s entrance stage in Korakuen Hall for a huge moonsault to ringside.

NJPW did a gag on the undercard with Shingo Takagi, making him wrestle under a lucha alter-ego for the first time ever. It was announced at the start of the night that a “family emergency” forced Takagi off the card, and that he would be replaced by “Hatsuratsu Guerrero,” a masked wrestler who looked incredibly similar to Takagi and won the match with Made In Japan. A big focus of the match was Templario and Ultimo Guerrero, as they’ll face off in a singles match on Friday.

The final night of the Fantastica Mania tour will go down tomorrow at Korakuen once again. The show will be headlined by Mistico putting his CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship up against Soberano Jr., a rematch from a Friday Arena Mexico card late last year. The show will also feature the soon-to-retire Tiger Mask facing Magnus, and Shoma Kato wrestling in his final bout before going on excursion in Mexico next month.
