Andrade El Idolo has captured his first-ever AEW title.
Andrade won the AEW National Championship off Mark Davis on Sunday night, beating the Aussie wrestler in 16 minutes. After connecting with his spinning back elbow to the head, Andrade put away Davis with his DM finisher for the pinfall victory.
Andrade nearly scored a lightning-quick win on Davis, catching him off guard in the bout’s opening moments with a spinning back elbow. However, Davis was able to survive the attack and get Andrade into a long battle.
Andrade, who left the Don Callis Family at Forbidden Door last month, has been trying to cause chaos within the group as of late. Due to how Don Callis constantly neglected his world title ambitions, Andrade made it clear that he wants to hurt the group by taking titles away from them, starting with Davis and the National belt.
Andrade earned an opportunity against Davis after beating fellow Callis family member Jake Doyle earlier this month. The former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion hadn’t earned an AEW title in either of his runs with the company prior to this weekend.
Davis won AEW’s National title back in May, dethroning Jack Perry. While he defended the belt many times, including against Mike Bailey earlier this month, visa issues prevented him from being stateside for a significant amount of his time with the belt.
