AEW Collision 8/8 Results: Kingston, Cassidy and Castagnoli advance in Continental Challenge Cup, Dory Funk Jr. remembered

The Continental Challenge Cup began on Saturday’s AEW Collision, with Claudio Castagnoli, Orange Cassidy and Eddie Kingston advancing from the first round.

AEW also aired a tribute to Dory Funk Jr. during the broadcast from the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Announcements

  • Darby Allin challenged TNT Champion Kevin Knight to a Falls Count Anywhere title match at All In London.
  • Knight instead called for a title defense against Chris Jericho on Wednesday’s Dynamite before considering Allin’s challenge.
  • Jack Perry vs. Jon Moxley and Jay White vs. David Finlay will continue the Continental Challenge Cup on Dynamite.
  • Roderick Strong vs. Kyle O’Reilly, Brian Cage vs. Hechicero and Katsuyori Shibata vs. Nigel McGuinness are scheduled as tournament matches for next week’s Collision.

Continental Challenge Cup begins

Collision opened with a recap of AEW Grand Slam Mexico before Tony Schiavone reviewed the Continental Challenge Cup format.

The 16-man single-elimination tournament will conclude at All In London, with the winner receiving the cup and the AEW Continental Championship.

Claudio Castagnoli vs. Ace Austin

Castagnoli used his size advantage early, but Austin responded with a dropkick and drove him to the mat before sending the Death Riders member outside.

Austin attempted a dive, only for Castagnoli to catch him and send him into the guardrail. Castagnoli then slowed the pace with strikes and submission holds.

Austin rallied with a Saito suplex, hurricanrana and Fosbury Flop. A springboard leg drop produced a near fall before Castagnoli intercepted another springboard attack with an uppercut.

Austin countered an attempted Giant Swing into a headscissors submission, but Castagnoli powered free. He eventually launched Austin into the air and hit a pop-up European uppercut for the pin.

Castagnoli became the first wrestler to advance in the Continental Challenge Cup.

Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay

A video package focused on Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay ahead of their match at All In London. Footage included Ospreay speaking after his victory over Mark Davis at Grand Slam Mexico and declaring himself ready for Omega.

AEW then aired a recap of the Motor City Machine Guns’ recent arrival.

The Brawling Birds vs. Viva Van & Vertvixen

Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor controlled much of their tag match against Viva Van and Vertvixen.

Van briefly stopped their momentum with a top-rope crossbody, but Hayter took both opponents down with a double clothesline. Windsor and Hayter followed with a double headbutt and Two Birds, One Stone to secure the victory.

Divine Dominion attacks the Brawling Birds

Divine Dominion’s music played after the match, drawing Hayter and Windsor’s attention toward the entrance.

Megan Bayne and Lena Kross instead attacked from behind. They left both women down at ringside, with Windsor being driven onto the timekeeper’s table.

  • A subsequent video package featured Darby Allin challenging Kevin Knight to put the TNT Championship on the line in a Falls Count Anywhere match at All In London.

Orange Cassidy vs. Matt Sydal

Cassidy and Sydal exchanged holds and counters during their first AEW singles match against each other.

Both fell from the ropes after striking each other simultaneously before Sydal gained an advantage with kicks and a meteora.

Cassidy later hit a Stundog Millionaire and DDT for a near fall. Sydal countered an Orange Punch into a pinning attempt before connecting with a knee strike.

A Shooting Star Press missed, however, and Cassidy immediately caught Sydal with the Beach Break to advance.

Jon Moxley addresses Jack Perry

Moxley congratulated Castagnoli backstage and spoke about putting the Continental Championship on the line through the tournament.

His attention then turned to Jack Perry, whom he will meet in the first round on Dynamite. Moxley said he respected Perry’s aggression but did not approve of his decision to team with Bang Bang Gang against the Death Riders later in the show.

The Rascalz vs. Aaron Solo & Steven Fuerte

Dezmond Xavier and Zachary Wentz made quick work of Aaron Solo and Steven Fuerte.

The Rascalz isolated Fuerte and finished him with Hot Fire Flame.

Afterward, Xavier said the group had demonstrated its abilities in the tag and trios divisions. Myron Reed added that they could also succeed in singles competition before calling out Mike Bailey.

Mike Bailey vs. Myron Reed

Bailey accepted Reed’s challenge, leading directly into an unscheduled singles match.

The two exchanged kicks before Reed sent Bailey outside with a dropkick. Bailey answered with a springboard moonsault to the floor.

Reed later caught Bailey out of an aerial attack with a cutter and followed with a dive over the turnbuckle. He missed a 450 splash in the closing sequence, allowing Bailey to counter with a Spanish Fly for the pin.

The Dogs target the tag division

David Finlay and Clark Connors addressed AEW’s tag team division backstage.

Finlay also turned his attention to Jay White ahead of their Continental Challenge Cup match on Dynamite, saying he intended to eliminate White and advance.

Hikaru Shida & Persephone vs. Maya World & Hyan

Persephone and Shida initially controlled Hyan before Maya World entered and attacked both opponents.

World and Hyan combined effectively against Shida, including a double-team attack that nearly produced the pin.

Persephone removed World from the equation, allowing Shida to hit a Falcon Arrow on Hyan. Hyan later responded with a spear for another near fall.

Shida escaped Hyan’s double chicken wing and drove her down with a double-arm-trapped piledriver to score the pin.

Kevin Knight responds to Darby Allin

Knight addressed Allin’s All In challenge in a backstage interview.

The TNT Champion said he wanted to deal with one challenger at a time and first offered Chris Jericho a championship match on Dynamite. Knight said he would consider Allin afterward.

Konosuke Takeshita G1 update

AEW aired a video package on Konosuke Takeshita’s G1 Climax campaign. The package noted Takeshita’s attempt to become the fifth wrestler to win consecutive G1 tournaments.

Jack Perry & Bang Bang Gang vs. The Death Riders

Perry immediately sought out Moxley, his upcoming Continental Challenge Cup opponent, but Moxley tagged Wheeler Yuta instead.

Juice Robinson later became isolated by the Death Riders before escaping their corner and bringing Perry into the match. Moxley finally tagged in, leading to a brief exchange in which both men took each other down with clotheslines.

The closing sequence broke down among all eight wrestlers. Perry hit a moonsault to the floor onto Moxley, Garcia and PAC before the Gunns prepared 3:10 to Yuma on Yuta.

Marina Shafir distracted the referee, allowing Finlay and Connors to interfere. The Dogs pulled Austin Gunn into the ring post, while Yuta struck Colten Gunn below the belt.

Garcia then directed Colten into Yuta’s Busaiku Knee for the pin.

Perry attacked Yuta after the bell and stared down Moxley as the Death Riders retreated.

Mike Bailey and Nick Wayne pursue MJF opportunity

Bailey spoke backstage about rebounding from his recent loss to Kyle Fletcher by defeating Reed. He then turned his attention to MJF and an opportunity connected to the second entry spot in the Casino Gauntlet.

Nick Wayne joined the interview and said he wanted the same opportunity, adding that his goal remained becoming AEW’s youngest world champion.

AEW remembers Dory Funk Jr.

AEW aired a tribute video honoring Dory Funk Jr.

The package featured photographs spanning Funk’s career, including images of Adam Copeland training with him. The Colorado Springs crowd applauded and chanted Funk’s name following the video.

Shane Taylor Promotions meets the Hurt Syndicate

Shane Taylor Promotions approached the Hurt Syndicate backstage about working together. Taylor said an arrangement between the groups could produce more money and violence. Carlie Bravo encouraged Bobby Lashley to count the money before Taylor cut him off.

Jack Perry promises to eliminate Jon Moxley

Perry delivered a backstage message ahead of his Continental Challenge Cup meeting with Moxley. He said he planned to eliminate Moxley from the tournament on Dynamite. AEW also promoted Jay White against David Finlay for the same show.

Jake Doyle vs. Eddie Kingston

Doyle controlled the early stages of the main event with his size and power, driving Kingston into the barricade and landing a running powerslam.

Kingston fought back with chops and headbutts before finally connecting with an exploder suplex. Doyle regained control with a clothesline to the back of the head and later hit a sit-out powerbomb after avoiding Kingston’s Uraken.

Kingston survived and landed two Urakens. He then trapped Doyle in a modified Dragon Sleeper and forced the Don Callis Family member to submit.

The victory sent Kingston into the next round of the Continental Challenge Cup and closed the show.
