Max Holloway injured and will not fight at UFC 222 in March

The much-anticipated featherweight championship fight between Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar is off.

The much-anticipated featherweight championship fight between Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar is off.

Brett Okamoto of ESPN reported Saturday that Holloway had suffered an injury and been forced to withdraw from his championship title defense that was scheduled to headline the UFC 222 event on Saturday, March 3rd in Las Vegas.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani has reported that Holloway suffered a leg injury that led to the withdrawal from the bout. Helwani has added that the UFC is attempting to non-title fight together between Edgar and Brian Ortega for this card. If that is signed they would attempt to get another title fight into the main event slot of the card.

This is the second time that this fight has been announced and affected due to an injury. Holloway and Edgar had previously been scheduled to headline the UFC 218 card last December and Edgar was replaced by Jose Aldo due to an injury he sustained.

The UFC has yet to make an announcement regarding the fight or the UFC 222 card. Without the featherweight championship fight, the top fight on the card is a heavyweight bout between Andrei Arlovski and Stefan Struve.
