NJPW cancels 2020 Best of the Super Juniors tour

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New Japan Pro-Wrestling decided to cancel the 2020 Best of the Super Juniors tournament that was set to kick off on May 12.

The Coronavirus outbreak has led to New Japan Pro-Wrestling deciding to cancel their Wrestling Dontaku tour and the company recently announced that they’ll also be cancelling the 2020 Best of the Super Juniors tour that was set to kick off on May 12 and end on June 6th at the Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo.

New Japan posted the official statement on their website[s] and issued an apology to fans who were looking forward to the events. They added that their thoughts are with those who are/were affected by the virus and they hope that New Japan Pro-Wrestling will be back in motion soon. As the COVID-19 situation in Japan continues to be monitored, they’ll make an announcement concerning the next scheduled NJPW event which is the Wrestle Dynasty show at Madison Square Garden on August 22nd.

When NJPW announced that they were cancelling shows through May 4th, it was noted in that article that they were considering the option of running empty arena shows.

The winner of this year’s Best of the Super Juniors would’ve been on a collision course with the current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi. Last year, Will Ospreay won the Best of the Super Juniors by defeating Shingo Takagi in the tourney final.
