Dream Slam Weekly (Vol. 14): Jaguar Yokota Celebrates Milestones and Stardom x NJPW Announces IWGP Women’s Championship

The summer continues to heat up further with matches worldwide, milestone celebrations, promotions celebrating anniversaries, and unfortunately, more illnesses and injuries.

Dream Slam Weekly (Vol. 14): Jaguar Yokota Celebrates Milestones and Stardom x NJPW Announces IWGP Women’s Championship

As July closes, summer heat, tournament season, and the global pandemic don’t show any signs of stopping. Thankfully, this week blurred by without too many big announcements. However, there were a few notable things, aside from illnesses and injuries, that is worth noting! I have all sorts of feelings and thoughts about the newly announced NJPW x STARDOM IWGP Women’s World Championship as it only further compounds my desire and need to get to Japan in November for this show. I need a Dr. Ian Malcolm S-Tier “Life Finds a Way” sort of miracle!

I hope everyone is staying hydrated, healthy & happy. We’re past the mid-way point of summer and the height of tournament season, but make sure to rest when you need to, especially with this unbearable heat lately!

  • Singles Match: Aoi vs. Rina Yamashita

TakaTaichiDespy Mania Tomoka Inaba & Aoi (JTO) vs. Stardom’s Maika (Donna del Mondo) and MIRAI (God’s Eye) – While MIRAI originated in Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling, Maika got her start in Just Tap Out before she was scouted by Giulia as the first member of DDM. MIRAI would leave TJPW and join DDM at the beginning of 2022, only to depart when Syuri struck out on her own after becoming World of Stardom Champion. With the increase of crossover between Stardom and NJPW, it is a logical matchup between JTO and Stardom as JTO’s talent has also been prominently presented on Stardom’s New Blood series, with Inaba even getting a Future of Stardom Championship match against current champion, Hanan.

Weekly Match Selection

This week, Jaguar Yokota celebrated 46 years since her debut in pro-wrestling, so I wanted to find a match that featured her. I happened upon this short five-minute exhibition match, which was from her retirement in 1986… I was in the second grade in 1986. Just wait for the double underhook avalanche suplex… yeah, exactly… oh and the post-match run in by Lioness Asuka!! It also has her retirement ceremony footage.

Jaguar Yokota would return on October 31, 1994, at AJPW’s Tokyo Dome show press conference to announce her return.

Typically, I try to stick to the official SNS channels for YouTube video content, but finding anything on Jaguar Yokota, or archived wrestling footage is quite the tall task, so I am just leaning into the 80s era glory with grainy digitized VHS glory… and the cheers of the Japanese crowd! It sounds like the women, especially young girls– outnumber the men!

  • Promotion: All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling
  • Event Name: Jaguar Yokota’s Retire Match
  • Show Date: (February 15, 1986)
  • Competitors: Jaguar Yokota vs. Devil Masami
  • Venue: Kawasaki City Gymnasium, Kanagawa, Japan

Thanks for reading! Have a great week!
