DISCLOSURE: Karen Peterson is currently working with Bushiroad (parent company of New Japan and STARDOM) on a limited basis on a series of articles on the history of Stardom leading into the Historic X-Over event in November that will appear on their website.

November. How are we already in the final nine weeks of 2022?! By this time next week, I’ll be checking and rechecking my suitcases and making sure that I have all my ducks in a row for Japan. That’s absolutely wild to me. It’s always once we clear Labor Day (the first weekend in September here in the US), where I feel like I sneeze and Halloween and Thanksgiving blur right past me and I am looking at winter holidays at home. Next week’s DSW will be the last one before I hop on my plane Tottori.

Yes, Tottori. I mentioned in a previous DSW when STARDOM had their first show a few weeks back. That was the place I went from Just Karen to Karen-sensei on my 23rd birthday. I spent five years of my twenties, living that small town slow lifestyle right out of an anime. After seventeen hours of flight time from Orlando to Tokyo, I’ll switch planes once more and head to my second hometown for the first time in ten years. Without Tottori, I would not be where I am today. I could have declined my dispatch offer and lived a very different life, so when I go ‘home’ it’s something very special to me. I’ll be in Kansai area for STARDOM Gold Rush and then take a night bus to Tokyo for Historic X-Over and a few days in Tokyo before returning home on Thanksgiving.

I had to choose between the Historic X-Over and Wrestle Kingdom 17, but last time I went to Japan in 2020, I promised myself and my friends in west Japan, that I would make the trip home. Yes, I will see some wrestling, but there will be plenty of non-sports adventures and time well spent off life staring at the autumn colors and eating my weight in all the foods I miss. I’ll hope you’ll join me on my first excursion to Japan in nearly three years!

Class Notes

TJPW Graduate Marika Kobashi returns to Wrestling! Earlier this year, Marika formally graduated from Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling, citing she wished to experience life outside of the sphere of professional wrestling. She’s been keeping busy with entertainment projects, but earlier in the week, PPP Tokyo, a slight more adult-centric promotion announced that Kobashi’s return to the ring would be in a tag match with Natsu Sumire and against Rina Yamashita and Chanyota. Kobashi will participate in PPP Tokyo’s 11/20 show at ShinKiba 1st Ring. I literally discovered her and TJPW right before she announced her retirement earlier this year, so I am excited that she’s entering the freelance market. (link)

No Updates from RCW Barcelona’s Women’s World Cup 3, but a LOT of imaginations started running while when Mercedes Varnado (BKA WWE’s Sasha Banks) snapped a two-shot with TJPW’s Miyu Yamashita. Hey, Mercedes, take me with you next time!!

Meanwhile in AEW…

It isn’t related to women’s wrestling at all, but I was this close to raving about Katsuyori Shibata showing up Wednesday night on AEW Dynamite to claim an All-Atlantic Championship match against Orange Cassidy this Friday on Rampage. That belt would look really, really good on him.

Yes, Shibata really is on Twitter after dodging years of it. He avoided it with the establishment of the LA DOJO and even more recently with his grappling exhibition with SZJ last summer and Wrestle Kingdom 16 match against his protoge, Ren Narita. Not Blue Check Verified yet, but formally announced by NJPW.

Anyways, with Hikaru Shida and Willow Nightingale in Japan and Emi Sakura and Mei Suruga flying all around the world, it’s a relatively slow week in AEW. No new announcements of TJPW talent coming stateside either.

Meanwhile in WWE…

Stars Above, The Uncle Paul’s (Triple H) Effect makes me want to watch WWE regularly again… ALL THESE WOMEN! …but also… give me IYO SKY vs. Asuka in a singles match please and thank you.

Monday Night Raw #1536 (10/31) Dallas, Texas, American Airlines Center

  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Title Match: Alexa Bliss & Asuka (w/Bianca Belair) defeated Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai & IYO SKY) (w/Bayley) (c) (16:25)

Match of the Week: Kabuki Warriors vs. Legacy Queens

Maybe I am feeling sentimental now that Asuka is a WWE Women’s Tag Champion again, or perhaps the YouTube algorithm just dropped this throwback match since she and Alexa are having a rematch at Crown Jewel this weekend. Asuka was my first foray into joshi. When she debuted in NXT, it was a the height of Black & Gold NXT, and much like the fan favorite babyfaces in NXT, she overstayed her time due to batch call ups at WrestleMania. Kairi was another one who lingered behind in NXT as those around her got spirited away to Raw and SD Live.

However, I still have issue with the mishandling of how the Kabuki Warriors were originally introduced with Paige as their manager and the lack of effort on WWE’s part to let Kairi and Asuka tell their story with their own voices from the start. Currently, KWs still hold the longest reign with the Women’s Tag Championship at 171 days, with Carmella They & Queen Zelina (132 days) and the IIconics (120 days). This is Asuka’s THIRD time as tag champion, previously holding the title with Charlotte Flair in the wake of Kairi’s return to Japan and now with Alexa Bliss upon her return to in-ring action.

What I want more than anything for the Women’s Tag Division are more cohesive presentations: separate music, matching ring gear, tag finishers and more merch. The IIconics were a great example, as were Fire and Desire because they felt like tag teams. Currently, DamageCTRL is killing it with IYO SKY and Dakota Kai bringing back the “we made our names as individuals, but we’ll put in the work to look like a team” approach. Yes, I know that Charlotte Flair and Natalya never really had a proper tag name, but they have legacy and pedigree, hence I’m just going to do the naming for WWE.

The only thing that would make this match better, is Lawler not being on commentary. I like Vic Joseph and Dio Maddin well enough as they were very deep in NXT and were quite personable on commentary. I never liked Jerry Lawler on commentary, especially for women’s matches. I wish there was a way to watch the match sans commentary, or to switch it to another language.
