Millie McKenzie returns to SenJo and Nina Samuels makes her SJ Debut

DISCLOSURE: Karen Peterson is currently working with Bushiroad (parent company of New Japan and STARDOM) on a limited basis on a series of articles on the history of Stardom leading into the Historic X-Over event in November that will appear on their website.

Greetings from Japan!! After nearly twenty hours of air travel, I arrived in Tottori on Monday evening. I spent a few days in my old stomping grounds before heading to Osaka, where I got to attend STARDOM ~GOLD RUSH~! Apologies for the delays, but the jet lag kicked me into the ground, and I wanted to include some of the actual wrestling I attended in both this week’s installment and next week’s (once I am home). I also wanted to apologize for last week’s DSW because in the scramble to get everything up while packing for this trip, I had forgotten to add the disclaimer prior to the opening of the post. 

There will be a full event report from Historic X-Over, but take note that the results for the show are listed in the NJPW section below. I miscalculated the travel time between the Tokyo Dome Area and Ariake, so I got home WAY later than I had anticipated. 

I hope if you know someone who is new to or curious about joshi, that you’ll share DSW with them!

Karen’s Excursion Diary – This was my first experience at Korakuen Hall and my first proper Sendai Girls’ show. I was happy to see lots of wrestlers compete for the first time, but also some familiar faces like Hiroyo Matsumoto, Tomoka Inaba and Millie McKenzie. If I haven’t said it before…. I absolutely adore ‘Aniki’ (Ryo Mizunami), Aja Kong and Mika Iwata. Also, I may not be a deathmatch darling, but I really love how accessible Isami Kodaka and Jun Kansai made the hardcore match feel. Team 200KG is a tour de force. Like Holy Cannolis they’re amazing to watch live.

Karen’s Excursion Diary – The one and only STARDOM show I ever experienced was in a very drafty ShinKiba 1st in the dead of January winter. The evolution and growth of STARDOM in the last few years to being able to pack out the Osaka Edion MAIN Arena and production value blows my mind. There were many wrestlers I saw three years ago, but they all felt completely new because they’ve grown up and developed as wrestlers. I loved seeing KAIRI in a wrestling ring again, and the fun of the moneyball ladder match, including the unexpected and premature mid-match rainmaking dropkick from Hazuki made for a memorable experience.

Teacher’s Notebook: Stop with all the interim championships and unifications. If a champion has to vacate due to unforeseen circumstances, give them a rematch gold ticket they can cash in on the current champion. It feels like any reign of the “Interim” Champion is simply a placeholder instead of a proper run, especially when you have to mint more than one interim champion in the same year.
