Insight into Athena’s ROH World Title win.

ROH Final Battle 2022 took place in December of that year and the pay-per-view saw Athena become ROH Women’s World Champion.

Ahead of her title defense against Hikaru Shida at Supercard of Honor, Athena guest appeared on Good Karma Wrestling

Looking back at her Women’s World Title win, she stated that she did not know she was winning the title until 40 minutes before the show started. She detailed the conversation she had with ROH/AEW owner Tony Khan about the title change.

So, it actually was one of those things that Mercedes Martinez was looking for an opponent for the pay-per-view (ROH Final Battle 2022). The pay-per-view was in my hometown and like, honestly, I had no clue that I was winning until, like, maybe 40 minutes before the show started? And Tony (Khan) brought me in the office, he goes, ‘Alright champ’ and I go, ‘What?’ And he goes, ‘Alright champ, let’s f*cking go’ and I was like, ‘Oh! What?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, you’re winning tonight’ and I was like, ‘Wow.’ It was really cool because my parents were in the crowd, a whole bunch of my friends were there, my husband’s there and it was just a really cool moment that was very much so unexpected walking through the door and you know, it just kind of took off from there.

Athena’s match against Shida was her 21st defense of the ROH Women’s World Title. There’s coverage of the event here on the POST Wrestling site.
