The box office results from this weekend are out, including those for the independent film Queen of the Ring.
The women’s wrestling film based on the 2010 book by Jeff Leen had a limited release over the weekend in 825 theatres across the U.S., resulting in a gross of $380,000, according to Box Office Mojo.
The box office grosses were led by Mickey 17 ($19.1 million), Captain America: Brave New World ($8.5 million), and Last Breath ($4.2 million).
When The Iron Claw was released in December 2023 through A24, it had a much wider distribution in nearly 2,800 theaters and generated $4,868,370 in its opening weekend.
Sumerian Films released the film starring Emily Bett Rickards as the iconic figure Mildred Burke, who helped establish women’s wrestling as an attraction across the country and later in Japan.
Queen of the Ring also features roles involving wrestlers Kamille (as June Byers), Toni Storm (Clara Mortensen), Trinity Fatu (Ethel Johnson), and Jim Cornette (Sam Mushnick).
The film will only remain in theatres for several more days, with director Ash Avildsen appearing multiple times on the AEW Revolution pay-per-view to urge fans to see the movie. He was joined by actresses Damaris Lewis (Babs Wingo) and Kelli Berglund (Nell Stewart).
Executive producers for Queen of the Ring include Jim Ross, and it premiered at the Buffalo International Film Festival last fall.
