A loaded mask helped aid Americano in his win against Lee, defeating him with a little over 60 seconds to go in the five-minute time limit match.
Lee hurt his foot after attempting to kick Americano in the head, hitting the loaded part of his mask in the process. Then moments later, Americano closed things out by scoring a diving headbutt off the top rope, once again using the hidden weapon to his advantage.
Americano was given a match against Lee after winning a four-man #1 contenders tournament in recent weeks, defeating Alex Shelley and Erik.
He has previously only earned tag titles in WWE under the Gable in-ring name, holding Raw, Smackdown and NXT belts, but never possessing gold in a singles division.
Lee was the Speed champ since November, when he dethroned Andrade to earn the title. He defended the belt twice in recent months, including a victory earlier this year against Gable.
Speed’s next matches will come in the women’s division, where the next challenger for Sol Ruca will be determined in a four-person bracket. Here’s what is coming up in the opening round:
Kelani Jordan vs. Wren Sinclair
Maxxine Dupri vs. Ivy Nile
