Truth is a Lie

Monday Night Raw from Phoenix kicked off with John Cena, who chided the crowd, calling Ron Killings a “sideshow comedian” whose greatest achievement is pretending to be him. Cena continued, calling the crowd keyboard warriors that don’t have the power to change anything, and “R-Truth is a gimmick that you will spit out a year from now”. Cena then noted that from 36 dates, he was now down to 19, as a graphic on the screen counted down while he listed off the cities he had been to. Cena demanded competition, and that brought out CM Punk.

Punk said that he wasn’t “stanning for TKO or defending the billionaires,” he was there to defend the people. Punk continued that they were all just spokes on a wheel, and it’s time that he proved that Cena was one too by taking the title from him. He said that he would let John Cena decide which one of his final eighteen dates they would have their match. Cena agreed and said it would be at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. The crowd went from boos to confused silence at this concept and the match was made official later in the night. This brought out “Mr. Money in the Bank” Seth Rollins, who simply held up the briefcase for a prolonged time as the segment ended.

Chad Gable vs. AJ Styles

Chad Gable and The Creeds were out next, with Gable talking about how banged up he was after this past weekend. Brutus Creed suggested Gable take the night off and let him face Styles, but Gable declined, saying he was an iron man and everyone would see why tonight. This led directly into his match against AJ. Gable took control early with the help of The Creeds’ distraction on the outside as the match went to an ad break, where The Creeds continued to get involved, attacking Styles behind the referee’s back. Styles recovered and went for the Styles Clash when The Creeds got involved yet again, to which Styles responded by taking them both out. Gable then countered the Phenomenal Forearm into the Ankle Lock, but Styles escaped and hit what Wade Barrett described as a “Flash Clash” Styles Clash for the win.

Queen of the Ring Fatal 4-Way First Round Match

Backstage, Roxanne Perez suggested she and Liv Morgan work together to make sure one of them won Queen of the Ring, but Liv said to stay out of her way. Perez responded by saying, “Let the best woman win,” and Liv retorted, “I will”.  This led right into the Queen of the Ring Fatal 4-Way first-round match featuring Liv Morgan, Roxanne Perez, Kairi Sane, and Rhea Ripley. Perez continually attempted to help Morgan in the early goings of this match despite her protests before finally giving in and working together.

After the commercial, Morgan appeared to save Perez from an Insane Elbow from Sane, but Ripley was able to powerbomb both of them simultaneously as they attempted a double Superplex. Rhea Ripley then recovered, taking all three women out, hitting the Riptide on Morgan, only to have Raquel Rodriguez appear and pull her out of the ring. Kairi Sane then hit the Insane Elbow on both Ripley and Rodriguez on the outside. Sane then hit the Insane Elbow on Liv, but Perez ran over and stole the pin to take the win.

Becky Lynch Gets Jumped

Becky Lynch was seen walking backstage and passed by Austin Theory and Grayson Waller, who were arguing loudly. A promo package was then shown, highlighting Nikki Bella’s history in WWE. Bella was then seen saying hello to Maxxine Dupri and Natalya in the back and then introducing herself to IYO Sky, who said Nikki paved the way for her and Sane. Then it was back to the ring as new Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch came out and ran through all of her accomplishments and wanted to celebrate adding the IC title to her list. Lynch said that she didn’t celebrate because Lyra Valkyria ruined everything and demanded that Valkyria come out, apologize, and raise her hand again. Valkyria appeared and looked like a cartoon character, trying to act mad, coming down the aisle. Bayley then appeared, jumping Becky from behind as the commentary team talked about Becky taking out Bayley before Wrestlemania.

FKA R-Truth

R-Truth then appeared, jumping up on the announce table, saying “they heard, they listened, they felt, and they understood” and that he was back because of the fans. Truth said that he felt different and then pulled out scissors and cut off his hair as the crowd chanted “holy shit”. He continued, “The truth has set me free. I am Ron Killings, I am the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Now put some respect on my name”.

Backstage, Finn Bálor wondered why he wasn’t in the King of the Ring tournament, and Dominik said that he took the spot since Finn didn’t get into Money in the Bank. Roxanne Perez appeared, and they congratulated her on her win. Liv & Raquel then entered, and Perez tried to say that she stopped Kairi from pinning her. Liv stormed off, and Finn said to go talk to her, but Dom said he had a match and left.

King of the Ring Fatal 4-Way First Round Match

Before this match began, a brief Mr. Iguana promo package was shown.

Backstage, Seth Rollins gave his still unnamed faction a pep talk, saying that this was now “an all-out assault” on both world titles as Bron Breakker was on his way to winning King of the Ring. This led into the men’s first round KOTR match, where Breakker quickly dominated all three of his opponents as the show went to commercial. After the break, all four men performed dives to the outside of varied sorts, culminating with Breakker splashing Dominik onto the announce table. After another ad break, Penta hit a big DDT onto Bron Breakker, and Dominik attempted to dump Penta and steal the pin, but it was merely a nearfall. Dominik then blocked three consecutive Blue Thunder Bomb attempts by Sami Zayn and hit two of the three amigos, only for Zayn to finally land the BTB instead.

Penta then hit the Penta Driver on Zayn, but Dominik broke up the pinfall attempt. Breakker then hit a high-speed spear on Penta only to have LA Knight appear out of nowhere and hit Breakker with the BFT. This allowed Sami Zayn to hit the Exploder Suplex and the Helluva Kick to advance to the semifinals of the KOTR tournament.

Backstage Goings On

Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed AJ Styles, who talked about Chad Gable being a great wrestler, whether or not he had a mask on. He also mentioned that Paul Heyman had threatened him the previous week. Styles then said he was going to find Gable and punch him. Cathy then found Grayson Waller and The New Day arguing, but Waller left as Cathy approached. New Day said they needed genuine contenders, as everyone else is in the middle of the pack. New Day ignored Cathy’s questions and walked off.

Sami Zayn ran into Karrion Kross in the back, and Kross congratulated him, saying he took his message to heart, and explained that he used LA Knight to win. Zayn got heated and said he won because he was good enough, and that’s why he would win the World Championship. Zayn left, and Kross laughed at his intensity.

Asuka Returns Next Week

An Asuka promo package was aired, and it was announced that she would be returning to Raw next week and competing in a Queen of the Ring first-round match against Ivy Nile, Raquel Rodriguez, and Stephanie Vaquer. Next week would also see Sheamus, Rusev, Bronson Reed, and a mystery opponent for the King of the Ring side of things.

Nikki Bella Returns

Nikki Bella was out next and brought up the all-women Evolution next month from Atlanta. Nikki mentioned several women’s performers and their talent, but failed to mention Liv Morgan. This brought Morgan out, who started screaming in Nikki’s face, saying she was jealous of her because she had respect, a championship, and a man. Nikki wondered aloud who Dominik belonged to, and Morgan responded by saying all she’d ever be is a reality show diva. Morgan then hit Bella with the Oblivion and left her lying.

World Heavyweight Championship

The main event of the night was the World Heavyweight Championship match with Gunther attempting to regain the title from Jey Uso, who entered the arena with his son. Michael Cole and Wade Barrett brought up how Jey could not be 100% after his last week, whereas Gunther has only had one match recently against Pat McAfee at Backlash in May. Cole also noted that this was the fifth time the two had squared off, with Gunther having three wins versus Jey’s one. Jey quickly got the sleeper on Gunther, and Gunther escaped as the show went to another commercial break.

Afterwards, Jey was favoring his midsection after hitting a flying crossbody. Michael Cole spoke of rumors of “internal injuries”, especially after the Tsunamis from Bronson Reed last week. Gunther then began targeting Jey’s midsection, ripping his shirt off and revealing heavy taping. Jey then attempted the sleeper again, but Gunther escaped, catching him in a sleeper of his own. Gunther hit Jey Uso with a release German Suplex on the outside as the show went to yet another break at 10:25 pm. Uso then started to mount a comeback, hitting a dive to the outside on Gunther, but each maneuver was affecting his ribs. Jey then hit the spear, and Uso Splash on Gunther for a two count. The two competitors went back and forth, exchanging near falls and sleeper holds until Jey finally went out. With that, Gunther is the new World Heavyweight Champion. Fireworks went off as Gunther held the title up with Jey Uso and his son dejected on the outside as the show ended.
