On the same day that Jon Jones confirmed his retirement from MMA, it’s been reported that Jones is facing yet another legal incident.
The Albuquerque Journal reported on Saturday that Jones, 37, faces a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident earlier this year.
A criminal summons accusing Jones of the charge was filed this past Tuesday.
The incident is said to have occurred in February when an officer for the Albuquerque Police was called to the scene of an accident and found a woman in the passenger seat, who appeared to be intoxicated and not fully clothed, according to the criminal complaint.
The woman alleged that the driver of the vehicle was Jones, but he left the scene. She proceeded to call Jones and the police service aid believed it was Jones on the line and that he “appeared to be heavily intoxicated and made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties”. The man on the phone would not confirm if he was Jones.
From the Albuquerque Journal:
When interviewed in person a few days after the crash, Jones said the woman found in the car had left his house earlier in the day intoxicated and called him after getting in the crash, at which time Jones said the person she handed the phone to “immediately opened the conversations with unprofessional language, which led him to doubt the legitimacy of the individual’s claim.”
The woman later told police she drank alcohol and consumed mushrooms at Jones’ house and recalled needing to change her clothes at his house and “her next recollection was being at the scene of a traffic accident.” She said the last person she remembered driving her car was Jones, the court record indicated.
Police said Jones called the woman’s phone 13 times from the time of the crash until 11:34 a.m. the following morning and that text messages from his phone were included, though could not be “captured” in call detail records.
Jones is scheduled for a bond arraignment on July 24, which is five days after his 38th birthday.
Jones has a long history of legal issues, including a hit-and-run incident in 2015 involving a pregnant woman, which led to the UFC stripping Jones of the light heavyweight championship.
Jones announced his retirement from MMA on Saturday.
