Familiar faces

Cody Rhodes arrived at the Amica Mutual Pavilion and was greeted by Nick Aldis, who told him that Gunther has not given word about his stipulation but will tonight. The Usos then greeted Cody, and after some fist bumps, Jey told Cody that he plans on winning his King of the Ring match tonight and winning the whole thing, where he’ll then challenge him for the title at SummerSlam. Cody was happy to hear that because he believes no one is more worthy of the title than Jey. However, he hopes that it’s Jey’s choice and not Roman Reigns’.

Jade Cargill vs. Lyra Valkyria vs. Sol Ruca vs. Charlotte Flair

Before the match, Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett noted that Rhea Ripley is still nursing a knee injury and her status is still up in the air. Jade Cargill also cut a promo about her win over Charlotte and Tiffany Stratton last week. Jade started the match hot, leaving only Charlotte in the ring. B-Fab and Michin got involved, and Alexa Bliss and Stratton took them out of the equation. A bit after the full commercial break, a lot of quick moves and step-up enzuigiris. The biggest spot came in the corner, with Jade powerbombing Lyra, while Lyra had Charlotte in a Death Valley Driver position. The big spotlight heading into the picture-in-picture break was a Sol Ruca moonsault on everyone outside, followed up by a springboard frog splash on Lyra for a two-count. The pace really picked up in the closing sequence. Sol avoided charging attacks from Lyra and Charlotte and was hit with a 450 clothesline, which the camera quickly cut to a different angle from. Jade took her out and hit Charlotte with Jaded. Lyra nailed Jade with a shotgun dropkick to break up the pin. Jade threw Lyra out, but Sol caught her with a Sol Snatcher. Lyra pulled Sol out of the ring to break up the pin and hit Jade with a top-rope leg drop. Charlotte caught Lyra with a Natural Selection, but Lyra quickly transitioned into a crucifix pin for a nearfall. Lyra went for Nightwing, but Sol hit a superkick. Charlotte locked in the Figure Eight on Lyra for the win.

New besties

Cathy Kelly found Tiffany backstage and asked why she helped out Charlotte. Tiffany said that she doesn’t like Charlotte, but she knows that she and Charlotte don’t want to see Jade as champion again. B-Fab and Michin also found Tiffany, but Chelsea Green came to the rescue with a kendo stick, and this time, Tiffany was happy to see Chelsea.

Jacob returns to Friday nights

Jey was getting ready for his match backstage, and Jacob Fatu was there, too. The Usos weren’t sure why, but Jacob said he was there to see Solo Sikoa. There were continued tensions between the sides, but Jacob told them they could handle their business while he handled his.

Blake Monroe (still) coming soon

Another diary entry vignette from Blake Monroe, who wrote about Charlotte. She noted that she watched Charlotte during the Women’s Evolution and called her one of the greats. She also called her tag team with Alexa Bliss a match made in codependent heaven. She told them they’ve deluded themselves into thinking they’re stronger together, but in the long term, they’ll be soft and weak. She said true stars shine alone, and her beauty is blinding.

Gunther names his stipulation

Gunther meets with Aldis backstage. He told him he doesn’t trust Aldis to vet his referees and that, for his title match next week, he’ll name his own referee. However, it’s a high-stakes decision he is contemplating, and he said he will tell Aldis by the end of the night.

Judgment Day reunion, kind of

Cathy Kelly was backstage with Finn Balor, who talked about joining SmackDown, noting he has old friends and enemies. That’s when R-Truth came in, thinking he was still in the Judgment Day, and warmly welcomed Finn. He talked about his plan to introduce Royce Keys to the group, and Damian Priest walks in. There is still tension between the two despite the greetings, but Truth told Finn that they love him after he left. Priest noted Finn’s past betrayal and how he only cares about Truth and their tag title match against the MFTs next week.

Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) vs. Paige & Brie Bella

The referee distractions played a big part in this match. It started when the ref missed a Paige tag, and it played into the finish when the ref had his back turned, insisting Brie get into her corner. Paige was trying to lock in the PTO on Fallon, and Jacy grabbed her hand to the ropes. The ref finally turned around and saw Jacy do this and ejected her. Jacy argued with the ref while Henley had Paige in a small package. Brie reversed it, helping her and Paige win.

Sami inspiration

Sami Zayn was backstage ranting at Johnny Gargano. Candice LeRae responded by asking Gargano when he was going to get up and do something about it. For some reason, Sami thought Gargano said that, thanked him, and ran over to the ring.

Toxic Mizhausen

Los Garza and Matt Cardona offered Danhausen human money and other valuables so that Danhausen wouldn’t curse the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Kit Wilson then demanded that Danhausen fix The Miz, who was spouting his catchphrases after being electrocuted. Kit ended up getting electrocuted, and Danhausen walked off.

Cody tells Sami the truth

Sami called out Cody, and after his entrance and the “what do you wanna talk about” routine, Sami asked Cody to be his friend and not the American Nightmare. He talked about past incidents involving Gunther and wondered whether what happened to him was an accident. The crowd chanted, “Sami sucks,” and Cody noted that if Sami was wondering if he had to explain pro wrestling to him, getting meta by pointing out his new t-shirt. He credited Sami for being there at WrestleMania XL, and Sami pointed out that he was the first person to come out, not Kevin Owens, CM Punk, John Cena, Randy Orton or Jey Uso. Now, how many of those guys could he call a friend? Cody noted that everything is about change and that he was able to be honest with them, but not with Sami, who wanted Cody to be honest with him. Cody got more fiery and said he’s tired of hearing Sami’s BS and that the fans are booing him because lately, he does suck. They’re tired of the whining and crying and how he’s not the old Sami Zayn they fell in love with. He’s not his Sami Zayn; he’s desperate because he knows it’s only about his WWE title, and he owes Sami an apology. He’s sorry he has the title because that means Sami never will. Sami slapped Cody’s mic. He quickly apologized, but later went out and grabbed a chair, which he threw to the ground after Cody asked if they were good.

The Bloodline whole again?

Jacob Fatu found Solo Sikoa backstage. He said he’s there with a message from Roman, who wants Solo to come home. Solo couldn’t believe it and said that wasn’t home, it was a doghouse, and Jacob is the lapdog. He talked about what Roman has done to Jacob, who understood, but he made his decision and stands by his business. If the OTC sent Jacob for Solo, then he’s coming for him. Solo told Jacob to tell Roman that if he wanted him back home, he could come and get him.

AAA Cruiserweight Championship: Axiom vs. Rey Fenix (c)

The crowd was dead silent for this match to start, but they kind of got into it near the end. That closing stretch featured Fenix ducking the Golden Ratio and hitting a fisherman’s buster for a two-count. They had a double clothesline spot until Axiom caught him with an armbar, which Fenix countered into a pin. Fenix and Axiom went back and forth in the corner, and Axiom hit a top-rope Spanish Fly for a two-count. Fenix hit a superkick, two spinning animal kicks, and the Mexican muscle buster for the win.

Gunther’s choice

Gunther met up with Aldis and decided on his referee choice. He wanted to add the human factor, someone with their heart in the right place, a good guy, the last real good guy: Sami Zayn, which Aldis wasn’t pleased with.

Busy U.S. Title scene

Trick Williams cut off Lil Yachty and talked about his King of the Ring loss. He said that it didn’t feel good, but it lit a fire in him. Trick said he wants to take his game and SmackDown to a new level and be the man who carries the brand as the leader of the new school. After saying he was “Trick James, bitch,” Ricky Saints and Carmelo Hayes confronted him. Hayes told Trick to make his choice on who he wanted to face. Ricky kept interrupting, pointing out that he already beat Hayes. Trick told them to shut up and settle things themselves, but it wouldn’t matter because he’s going to win anyway. As he and Yachty walked away, Ricky pushed Hayes into Yachty, and they brawled until Trick took both of them out.

Royce vs. The Bloodline

Solo Sikoa met up with Royce Keys before his KOTR match. He noted that The Bloodline is here to help Jey, including Jacob, Royce’s old friend. He told Royce he didn’t have to fight for or with him, but he didn’t want to see Royce as part of Roman’s war.

B-Fab & Michin vs. Tiffany Stratton and Chelsea Green

The crowd was fully behind Green, whom B-Fab and Michin controlled throughout the match. Jade Cargill pulled Tiffany off the apron with the ref distracted when Chelsea went for the hot tag. Michin hit a Styles Clash for the win. Tiffany attacked Jade after the match, but the numbers were too much. After hitting Jaded, Cargill held up the U.S. Championship.

No love lost

Cathy was with Kiana James, who said that her friend had betrayed her. She said she did everything for Giulia, secured matches, and made her champion. She said Giulia needed her, but when she needed her, she was useless. Giulia confronted her and said she only needed Kiana for English for her contracts, but not for help in the ring. She said Kiana used her momentum, and Kiana said she eclipsed her. Giulia told Kiana that her English is better now, that she has the words to say this, and then slapped her.

Bullet Club for life

There was a quick backstage moment where Tama Tonga ran into Finn Balor. Tama said it had been a long time and welcomed Finn to SmackDown.

Can Sami be trusted?

Cody was in the hallway with Aldis and couldn’t believe Gunther’s decision. Aldis said his hands were tied with Gunther’s lawyers. Cody noted that Sami is all over the place. When Sami confronted him, he asked if they were good. Sami threw Cody’s words back at him and told Cody good luck for next week.

Eyes on the prize

Cathy was backstage with LA Knight, who flip-flopped The Usos, but threw in some digs on Roman, calling him Nostra-dumbass after referencing Nostradamus for predicting The Bloodline would be at SmackDown. He vowed to overcome the insurmountable odds and be at Roman’s front door.

LA Knight vs. Royce Keys vs. Finn Balor vs. Jey Uso

Jey Uso went after LA Knight when he tried to run back his entrance, but the match then took a deliberate pace. Keys looked dominant throughout the match, and Solo had his back when Jimmy confronted him. Finn later stopped Knight and Jey from fighting each other and convinced them to clean out the announce table. Finn and Knight held up Keys for Jey to hit a triple powerbomb through the table. Finn was on the top rope and slammed Knight down onto Jey when he leaped to the top rope. Finn hit the Coup de Grace on Jey, but Keys pulled him away from the pin. Solo hyped up Keys, which distracted him, allowing Knight to land a tope suicida. Royce and Knight went at it in the ring. Solo caught Knight with the Samoan Spike, and Keys hit the ultimate spinebuster, but Jey came in with an Uso splash for the win.

Here is what was announced for SmackDown next week:

  • WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Gunther (Sami Zayn special guest referee)
  • Ricky Saints vs. Carmelo Hayes (winner earns a United States championship match at Night of Champions)
  • WWE Tag Team Championship: Damian Priest & R-Truth (c) vs. MFT (Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga)
  • Queen of the Ring semifinals: Charlotte Flair vs. Liv Morgan
