Liv Morgan has retained the Women’s World Championship against Iyo Sky in the opening match of SummerSlam Night 1.
Morgan pinned Sky after a Codebreaker and Ob-Liv-ion, completing her first televised title defense since winning the championship at WrestleMania 42.
Sky controlled the early exchanges and drove Morgan into the corner with double knees. Morgan responded by sending her challenger into the ringside barricade before taking control with the Three Amigos and a basement enzuigiri.
The momentum shifted again when Sky snapped Morgan’s arm across the top rope and followed with a missile dropkick. She later powerbombed the champion from the apron to the floor.
Roxanne Perez then distracted referee Jessika Carr as Sky climbed the ropes. Women’s Intercontinental Champion Raquel Rodriguez used the opening to shove Sky to the mat, but Morgan could only secure a two-count.
Sky recovered and sent Morgan over the top rope before wiping out Perez and Rodriguez with a moonsault to the floor. Back inside, she caught Morgan on the turnbuckles and delivered a Spanish Fly for another near fall.
Morgan avoided an Over the Moonsault and hit a Codebreaker from the middle rope, but Sky kicked out. The challenger later German-suplexed Morgan onto the apron and drove her into the ring post with a meteora, hurting her own knee in the process.
Sky missed another moonsault before escaping an attempted Ob-Liv-ion. Morgan anticipated the counter, however, and immediately connected with a Codebreaker followed by Ob-Liv-ion for the pin at 13:35.
