Baron Corbin has secured his first main roster WWE belt in nearly a decade.
Corbin ended Trick Williams’ run as WWE United States Champion on Sunday night, beating him as part of SummerSlam Night 2.
After bumping Williams’ manager Lil Yachty off the ring apron and onto a table at ringside (a chain-reaction bump which started following a move from Williams, inadvertently making him responsible for hurting his own manager), the referee was distracted. Corbin capitalized on this moment, hitting Williams in the head with his U.S. title then landing his End of Days finisher for the pinfall victory in nine minutes.
The win begins Corbin’s first main roster WWE title reign since 2017, when he held the United States title for 70 days.
Williams had carried the WWE United States Championship since April, when he dethroned Sami Zayn at this year’s Wrestlemania. He has since defended on three consecutive Premium Live Events (PLE), beating Zayn in a rematch then also taking down ex-NXT champ Ricky Saints.
Corbin made his return to WWE television last month, interfering in a match between Williams and Carmelo Hayes. Back in the company after a little under two years away, Corbin had kept his focus on Williams and his U.S. title since returning.
