** Colt Cabana joined the commentary team of Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness for this episode, which was recorded on Thursday, July 17, at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois.

Dustin time

Tony Schiavone was in the ring at the start of the show to introduce the new TNT Champion, Dustin Rhodes.

Rhodes said he wished his dad were there, as the crowd chanted, “Dusty.” He said that he lived by his father’s words: “Keep steppin’”. He promised to give his all as a fighting champion.

At this point, Don Callis and Kyle Fletcher made their way to the ring. Fletcher called Rhodes’ speech a “load of crap” and said he would not rest until he took the TNT Championship.

Fletcher and Rhodes traded barbs, and then Callis stepped in to say he would hold open a place in the Don Callis Family for the new champ. Dustin shoved Callis after the manager described him as the “third wheel” in the Rhodes family. There was then some physicality between Fletcher and Rhodes before Callis called his man off.

Ricochet vs. AR Fox

Fox got off to a great start against Ricochet, but Toa Liona and Bishop Kaun of Gates of Agony appeared at ringside shortly after the bell rang. Ricochet turned the momentum around with some heel tactics, as Nigel McGuinness suggested a hair vs. hair match between the two.

After a fifty-fifty period, Ricochet got the pinfall win with the Spirit Gun. Liona and Kaun then entered the ring and tossed out Fox before aligning with Ricochet, holding up his arms in victory.

A message for Hangman

At this point in the show, Jon Moxley, Marina Shafir, and Wheeler Yuta attacked Colt Cabana, bloodying him with a chain, which they then used to hang him over the ring ropes. The Death Riders left as the crowd chanted “You tapped out” at Moxley and EMTs tended to Cabana.

** Backstage, Lexi Nair was with Kris Statlander, who was interruped as the Death Riders passed by, with Wheeler Yuta telling her, “Champions bounce back.”

Megan Bayne vs. Tay Melo

Bayne dominated the beginning of this match, which had a no-interference stipulation, before Melo trapped her opponent in a Fujiwara armbar. Bayne would power out, however, and throw Melo to the floor. Back in the ring, Bayne continued to dominate.

Melo got in a spell of decent offense, grabbing a couple of near-falls, but Bayne prevailed with a running Liger Bomb.

** Scorpio Sky and Sky Flight were backstage when they were approached by Don Callis.

Alex Windsor vs. Taya Valkyrie

Before the match, Alex Windsor said in a backstage clip that Tony Khan had given her “the call” to make her Collision debut. Windsor won a relatively brief match, submitting Valkyrie. Tony Khan tweeted that she was officially “All Elite” while the show was on the air.

Athena Elite Wrestling

As the previous match ended, Athena appeared in one of the balcony boxes to ridicule Toni Storm, who soon emerged to say she was the only “balcony bitch” and to challenge Athena to sign her contract and fight her immediately. Athena refused, telling Storm that she would have to face her “minion,” Billie Starkz, on Wednesday.

Storm accepted the match and said that Starkz would get a title match if she managed to win on Wednesday.

After exchanging insults, Storm ran up the stairs to get her hands on Athena, who ran away.

** Backstage, Billy Gunn and Anthony Bowens argued before Gunn told Bowens he had arranged a great match for him on next week’s episode of Collision.

$200,000 Four-way Tag: The Gates of Agony vs. Big Bill & Bryan Keith vs. CRU vs. The Gunn Club

An all-action match, with a notable reaction for Big Bill’s first tag into the match, which soon broke down into an all-out brawl on the floor.

The Gunns had a lot of ring time in the match, and Colten was seen grabbing his knee after an innocent-looking bump with Big Bill. He was notably absent from the end of the match after a replay. Fans in attendance reported that he had been helped to the back.

Action Andretti took the pin from Bishop Kaun, with an assist from Ricochet.

Max Caster vs. Kyle O’Reilly

Max came out with his usual schtick, insulting the crowd just as they were doing his chant. Kyle O’Reilly answered the five-minute open challenge. Caster attempted to run away at one point, but was tripped by Roderick Strong. O’Reilly won the match with 2m 45s left on the clock.

** Backstage, Juice Robinson was angry at Ricochet for costing the Bang Bang Gang $200,000. Big Bill entered, and the two fought.

Rush vs. Katsuyori Shibata

A fun match-up, presented as a battle of two men without fear. They charged at each other as the bell rang, and soon entered a brutal chop battle. Rush soon got the upper hand, throwing Shibata into the ringside barrier and steps.

Shibata had an effective comeback, tying Rush up in a figure-four. Rush escaped, and the momentum swung back to Shibata, who escaped The Horns. As Shibata looked to have the upper hand, Dralistico and Beast Mortos interfered (right in front of the referee). This allowed Rush to deliver The Horns for the win.

After the bell, LFI beat on Shibata until a chair-wielding Powerhouse Hobbs arrived.

Main Event: Bandido, Mike Bailey, Kevin Knight & Mascara Dorada vs. Josh Alexander, Hechicero, Rocky Romero & Lance Archer

As most have come to expect from AEW, this was another crowd-pleasing multi-man match with plenty of styles on display. The power players such as Lance Archer would take over, only to be neutralised by the babyface high-flyers delivering simultaneous dropkicks.

Mascara Dorada grabbed the pin on Rocky Romero to clinch the match for the babyfaces.
