In second-ever appearance since losing EVP status, Young Bucks advance in tag team tournament

Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite, the final Wednesday evening card in the promotion’s residency at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, opened with action in the AEW World Tag Team Eliminator Tournament. In the second-last quarter-final matchup of the bracket, Matt and Nick Jackson faced off against Truth Magnum and Turbo Floyd of The Outrunners. The winner of this match is scheduled to fight against the winner of a tag bout between Gates of Agony and Brodido (Brody King & Bandido), which will take place on Collision this Saturday.

The Young Bucks, no longer EVPs, were given no entrance for this match and were given a botched nameplate on the broadcast. A pre-taped promo aired about how they feel disrespected by the company.

The Outrunners had some double-team success early in the match, including stereo backbody drops. The Bucks got back into control of the match as the bout went out of the ring, coming through the ropes with stereo tope suicidas.

Floyd took down both Bucks with a double suplex to set up for a hot tag to Magnum. He tried to take on both Bucks at the same time, but eventually, the two-on-one disadvantage caused the ex-EVPs to get back ahead in the fight.

After being isolated for minutes, Magnum tried to tag out of the match. However, Matt Jackson pulled Floyd off the ring apron, forcing Magnum to stay in the ring. Nick hit Magnum with a Corkscrew Kick as Matt came off the ring apron with a cutter to Floyd at ringside.

Nick leaped off the top rope with a crossbody, but it wasn’t enough to put away Magnum. The Bucks hit a double-team dive maneuver (Nick came off the top with a frogsplash as Matt landed a standing moonsault) for another near fall.

Magnum avoided a clothesline from the Bucks, giving Floyd the chance to finally get back into the match. He delivered bodyslams to both Bucks and then brought Magnum back in for their “You Son of a Bitch!” double-team move, although Nick superkicked their hands apart, preventing Matt from getting hit by the maneuver.

Nick stopped The Outrunners from landing a Total Recall to Matt, superkicking both of them. Floyd remained on his feet after taking two superkicks, responding by knocking down Matt and Nick with a double clothesline.

The Outrunners scored their double-elbow to Matt, but it didn’t earn them a pinfall win. Bucks regained momentum in the match, getting Floyd out of the ring and starting to score double-team moves to Magnum.

Magnum got another near fall for his team, trying for a roll-up after dodging a superkick. Matt started to complain with the referee, allowing him to low blow Magnum to while the official’s view was blocked. Matt shoved the referee and then was shoved in turn, giving Magnum the opening for another roll-up attempt.

Nick came into the ring and tried to superkick Magnum, instead accidentally hitting Matt. Floyd got into the ring and The Outrunners scored a Total Recall, but Nick was able to break up a pin attempt afterward.

The Outrunners tried for another Total Recall, but Magnum had his legs held by Nick at ringside, stopping him from charging forward for the move. Matt got off Floyd’s shoulders and shoved The Outruner into his teammate. Matt tried for a roll-up while grabbing Floyd’s tights, but still couldn’t get the pinfall win.

Magnum was thrown groin-first into a ringpost by Nick. The Young Bucks then scored a TK-Driver to Floyd, earning them a pinfall win. With no theme music playing, The Young Bucks celebrated their quarter-final victory.

Kazuchika Okada came to the ring after the match, clapping approvingly of the Bucks’ performance. Okada joined The Bucks in a post-match beatdown of The Outrunners, causing Swerve Strickland to come in for the save.

The Outrunners sent The Bucks out of the ring with clotheslines, allowing them to pick on Okada in the ring alongside Strickland. The Bucks attempted to peel Okada out of the ring and to safety, but Strickland came diving off the top and to the outside with a stomp onto all three heels as the segment came to an end.

Shelton Benjamin becomes the second man to give MJF a thumbs down

Backstage, Mark Briscoe asked Renee Paquette if she had seen MJF tonight. Ricochet, who is going to face Briscoe tonight, said that he should be worried about him, not MJF. Briscoe said that he’s going to whoop Ricochet’s ass, but what he’ll do is only a fraction of what he will eventually do to MJF.

MJF appeared outside The Hurt Syndicate’s locker room, appearing just days after Bobby Lashley gave him a thumbs down. Shelton Benjamin appeared outside to chat with MJF. “I am so sorry about Bob’s actions,” MJF said. “I mean, that just made it so uncomfortable and awkward for us. But now that Bob’s out of the equation, me, you, and Montel can…”

Benjamin cut him off. He said MVP wasn’t there because he’s disgusted with MJF. “The only reason you didn’t get laid out months ago was because MVP stuck his neck out for you,” Benjamin told MJF. He told MJF to “get the hell out of here.”

If how Benjamin felt about MJF wasn’t made clear from that exchange, he made things even more obvious moments later: MJF’s status in The Hurt Syndicate? “You are out,” Benjamin said.

Christian Cage “disowns” Nick Wayne and Kip Sabian

Tony Schiavone appeared in the ring for an interview with Christian Cage. Cage was asked about what happened at All In, where Adam Copeland told him to “find himself.”

“My name is Christian Cage and I’m an asshole,” he said. Cage explained that he was obsessed with becoming AEW Champion, but said that during his world title bout at Revolution in March, an unsuccessful title bid against Jon Moxley and Copeland, for a split second he became “an asshole with feelings,” costing him the win.

Cage then turned his focus on Nick Wayne, Momma Wayne and Kip Sabian, saying they never took risks in their careers and shouldn’t have questioned him since he’s the most experienced in the group.

Now to Copeland: “You told me to go find myself. Well, maybe I did, and maybe I didn’t. But I do know this. You and I are so different, but somehow Adam, somehow, we are the same.”

Cage continued to talk about how he was only looking out for Wayne and Sabian when controlling them in The Patriarchy.

“You have the audacity to call yourself the new face of AEW now and forever,” Cage said about Wayne. “Trust me when I saw this: You have every tool to be that. But you’re going to have to get past Christian Cage to be there. Nick Wayne, in your young life, you already have one dead father. And now you have another father that’s just dead to you. Because at this very moment, Nick Wayne and Kip Sabian, I disown you.”

As Cage was on his way out, he suddenly got caught on the ramp by the recently disowned Wayne and Sabian. “I disown you!” said Wayne after striking him in the head with his ROH belt. Wayne and Sabian both grabbed steel chairs for a standing Conchairto to Cage. The crowd chanted “f*** Nick Wayne” as the segment came to a close.

In a somewhat tense backstage confrontation, FTR and Young Bucks said they hope to see eachother in the tag team eliminator tournament finals.

Adam Page defends against Jon Moxley in stunning sequel to All In

The second bout of the night, and definitely the biggest of the evening, saw Adam Page put his AEW World Championship on the line against Jon Moxley. This match had the stipulation of everyone else being banned from ringside, (theoretically) preventing any Death Riders schenanigans. Security was shown all around the venue to prove that no run-ins would be allowed.

Moxley was reeling early, attempting to go to ringside to catch a breather but instead getting sent into the timekeeper’s area with a clothesline. Moxley started to go on his first run in the match after they got back into the ring.

Moxley went to the ring apron after getting hit with a fallaway slam. He dodged a springboard lariat from Page, but was hit with a follow-up lariat just seconds later. Hangman came flying to the outside with a crossbody before bringing the match into the ring.

Page got a near fall with a Death Valley Driver. Moxley tried for a kimura immediately after the kick-out, but Page was able to reach the ropes for an escape. Moxley came running off the ropes for a move, but instead Page scored a pop-up powerbomb. The fight went to ringside once again, where Moxley tossed Page into steel stairs. They went on top of the stairs, where Moxley scored a nasty-looking piledriver just before the show went to a commercial break.

Moxley was chipping away at Page with strikes as the show returned, although the champ was beginning to power up in the process. Page caught a kick from Moxley, leading to an exchange where they traded blows on the feet. Page hit a backdrop suplex, then a lariat to end the back-and-forth battle.

Page tried for a Buckshot Lariat, but Moxley avoided the move by dropkicking Page off the ring apron. Moxley tried for a piledriver onto the commentary table, but Page was able to reverse it into a Deadeye.

Back in the ring, Page scored a Tombstone Piledriver for another two-count. Page tried to stomp onto the head of Moxley, but the former champ caught the leg, tripping Hangman into a bulldog choke. Page escaped the submission, transitioning into a Lebell Lock (causing “Yes!” chants from the crowd).

Moxley escaped the submission by reaching the ropes. The fight went over to the ring apron, where Moxley escaped a Deadeye by scratching his nails across Page’s back – Ouch! Moxley reversed the Deadeye into a piledriver onto the ring apron.

Moxley scored a Gotch-style piledriver in the ring, although Page kicked out at the pin attempt immediately after. Moxley and Page traded forearms in the middle of the ring, waking up a hurt Page.

Page sent Moxley to the ring apron, then knocked him to the floor with a big boot. Hangman came flying off the top and to the outside with a moonsault. Page brought Moxley into the ring and tried for a Buckshot Lariat, but Moxley once again avoided it. After a series of reversals, Page scored a Deadeye, but the move took out the referee at the same time.

With the referee hurt, Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta were shown attempting to get into the ring. While they were stopped by security, Marina Shafir was able to grab the AEW World Championship from the timekeeper’s area and slide it to Moxley.

Page tried for a Buckshot Lariat, but instead got blasted in the head with a title. Was this enough to put him away? Nope! He kicked out again. As the Death Riders were being escorted from the venue, Darby Allin appeared from the rafters, diving onto the heel trio and nearby security.

After Moxley watched the impressive stunt from Allin, he turned around and ate a Buckshot Lariat from Page. Page was able to connect with a Deadeye after some reversals, then scored another Buckshot Lariat to win in 26 minutes, defending his AEW World Championship for the first time. This was probably one of the better TV matches we’ll see this year, and easily the match of the night.

Athena scores pinfall win against world champ Toni Storm

The co-main event of the night saw future AEW Women’s World Championship title challenger Athena team with Billie Starkz to take on Toni Storm and Alex Windsor.

Athena avoided going one-on-one with Storm early in the match, instead tagging in Starkz to go against the champ. The heel duo were in control before the match went to commercials, as Starkz clotheslined Storm at ringside, then she was able to catapult Windsor into a spinebuster from Athena in the ring.

Windsor, stuck in the ring after Storm was swept off the ring apron by Starkz, got a near fall with a discus lariat to Athena. The pin attempt was only interrupted up by Starkz, who came off the top with a Swanton Bomb.

Storm eventually got the hot tag to Starkz, who she wailed away at with Mongolian Chops, then a series of punches from a Thesz Press position. The champ landed a German Suplex and a hip attack, but during this sequence, commentary said Athena sneakily tagged herself into the match. A Storm Zero attempt onto Starkz was stopped by Athena, who came off the top with an O-Face for the pinfall win. A tag which went unnoticed by Storm ended up costing her the match.

Athena, who has a contract to face the AEW women’s world champ, scored a clean pin against Storm! She told Storm after the match that “It’s only a matter of time” before she takes the title from her.

Hangman Adam Page was interviewed backstage, but before he could talk, he was interrupted by MJF. The All In Men’s Casino Gauntlet winner said Page is a coward because he won’t put his title on the line in a singles bout unless he cashes in his gauntlet contract.

Page, who still isn’t going to hand MJF a title shot, said there are other more worthy challengers ahead of him in line for a shot, like Mark Briscoe. Page made MJF leave after saying that, without The Hurt Syndicate by his side, nothing was stopping the champ from jumping him.

Willow Nightingale said in a backstage interview that she booked a fight against Thekla for Thursday night’s episode of Collision.

Before the main event, here’s a quick rundown of Thursday night’s episode of AEW Collision:

  • Gates of Agony vs. Brodido (World Tag Team Title Eliminator Tournament Quarter-Final)
  • FTR vs. Bang Bang Gang (World Tag Team Title Eliminator Tournament Semi-Final)
  • Willow Nightingale vs. Thekla
  • Dustin Rhodes vs. Kyle Fletcher (TNT Championship) (Street Fight)
  • Kris Statlander in action

With help from Brodido, Mark Briscoe avenges loss to Ricochet

The main event of the night saw Mark Briscoe attempt to get revenge for his Double or Nothing loss to Ricochet.

This match had a hot start, with Briscoe getting ahead against Ricochet. Briscoe was planning on doing a dive to the outside after knocking Ricochet out of the ring with a karate chop, but got distracted after he noticed that the Gates of Agony had made their way to ringside. Still distracted by the Gates, Briscoe was kicked out of the ring and then hit with a tope suicida by Ricochet as the show went to its final break.

Ricochet attempted to use a steel chair as the show returned, but had the attempt stopped by the referee. Briscoe got a two-count from a roll-up attempt, which he found due to Ricochet getting caught off guard by the referee ripping the chair from his hands.

Briscoe tried coming off the ropes with a move, but Gates of Agony member Toa Liona lowered a rope, causing Briscoe to fall out of the ring. Ricochet did a dive over the top and to the outside, then scored a springboard elbow to Briscoe back in the ring. He connected with a standing moonsault, but Briscoe kicked out at two, keeping the match going.

Briscoe dodged a Spirit Gun, and Ricochet escaped a J Driller attempt moments later. Briscoe clotheslined Ricochet out of the ring and tried for a kick through the ropes, but Ricochet was pushed out of the way by Bishop Kaun, who ate the shot instead.

Briscoe knocked Ricochet off the ring apron with a right hand, then used a steel chair to launch himself over the ropes and dive onto Ricochet and Kaun at ringside. The match went back into the ring, where Briscoe got a two-count with a hard lariat.

Ricochet once again escaped a J Driller, but Briscoe was able to drop him with a lariat immediately after. Briscoe was pushed off the top by Leona, a dirty tactic which the referee didn’t see. Ricochet scored Vertigo, but Briscoe remained alive with a kickout at two.

The interference from Gates of Agony became too much for Bandido and Brody King, who came to ringside to even the odds. The teams brawled to the back, distracting Ricochet, who got rolled up by Briscoe for a near fall.

Ricochet landed a hard knee strike and then a spinning back kick. Briscoe responded with a lariat, then finally connected with the J Driller to earn the pinfall win in just under 14 minutes – a strong headliner for an overall great episode of Dynamite.

Briscoe got on the mic before the show came to an end, calling out MJF.

“You brought my brothers name forth one time, shame on you. But you brought it forth again! Shame on me! If I don’t obliterate your ass. Man, I tell you man, I’ve never felt like this. Never felt like this before, man. I need help, man. I need help, man! I’ve never felt like this. For the first time, I really feel like I may never see my brother again because I know he’s up there in heaven, chillin in that mansion, but MJF, if I kill your ass in cold blood and I don’t repent, because I can’t repent, because not a single cell in my body feels even the slightest bit of remorse, I’m worried man, I’m worried. So MJF, do me a favor, man. Make my day, dammit. Right here, right now, get your ass out here, let’s do this! Me and you!”

MJF’s music hit, but the former champ didn’t come out. Instead, in comments made backstage, he said he doesn’t take Briscoe seriously, but has to face him because Adam Page mentioned that Briscoe is a more worthy title challenger at the moment.

“Now I have to prove a point because Seabiscuit said I’m a coward, he said I’m too cowardly to wrestle you inside my ring,” MJF said, referring to Page.

MJF said he has booked a match against Briscoe for next week, and it’ll happen as long as Briscoe can make it. It was at this moment that MJF appeared from behind to attack Briscoe. Wearing a shirt that said “MJF did nothing wrong,” he put on his Dynamite Diamond Ring in hopes of striking Briscoe in the head with it.

But, preventing this was Hangman Page, who came down to the ramp. MJF escaped a Buckshot Lariat and then a J Driller, running to the stage. He stared down Briscoe and Page as the show came to an end. In what looks like a match which could determine Page’s next opponent, MJF and Briscoe are set to battle it out next Wednesday.
