MJF is the new CMLL World Light Heavyweight champion after beating Averno at Arena México on Friday night.

The main event at the arena saw MJF play the pro-American heel and was accompanied by Jon Cruz (Serpentico) as his translator for the pre-match promo and several interference spots.

MJF insulted Averno, calling him a “nobody” and a “perro” (dog), setting up Averno’s response to the delight of the crowd.

MJF had super heat from the audience as he retreated to the floor after the match began.

Averno attempted an Angel’s Wings off the second turnbuckle, and his knee buckled. He managed to crawl on top of MJF, who got his foot on the rope. MJF applied a half-crab, and Averno fought to the rope. As MJF distracted the referee, he kicked Averno low and reapplied the half-crab and forced the submission in 11:52.

The crowd booed MJF’s announcement as the new champion and was promptly confronted by Zandokan Jr.

The challenge was accepted, and the two will meet for the championship on Friday, August 15.

Afterward, MJF cut a promo backstage insulting both Zandokan Jr. and Místico, which is the major match they are building to.
