BJ Penn has once again been arrested, continuing what has been an increasingly concerning year full of legal troubles for the UFC Hall of Famer.
Penn, 46, was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly violating the terms of a restraining order against him, local police told Hawaii News Now. A $2,000 bail was set and has since been paid out, ending his short time in custody.
Penn’s mother, Lorraine Shin, was granted a protective order through May 2026 after allegedly being assaulted by the ex-MMA fighter four months back.
Shin, 79, alleges that Penn is struggling with Capgras delusional syndrome, a neurological condition where someone begins to falsely believe that “a family member or close friend is an imposter.”
“[He thinks] I am not Lorraine Shin, I killed his family and have taken over his mothers identity, and he wants me to be removed from his home,” Shin said in a temporary restraining order filing earlier this year.
Concerning social media posts from Penn over the past few months have reinforced such a claim, with numerous clips on his Instagram page addressing “fake” versions of people in his personal life.
Shin recalls items being stolen from her house by Penn, and the ex-MMA fighter becoming violent in one instance when confronted over his actions.
Penn was also arrested in June for violating a protective order.
Penn headlined nine separate UFC pay-per-view cards during his MMA career, which spanned from 2001 to 2019. His decorated career, including title reigns at lightweight and welterweight, earned him an induction into the UFC Hall of Fame’s Modern Wing in 2015.
