In a come-from-behind performance, Mistico retained his masked status and took the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship off MJF on Friday night.

Mistico dethroned MJF in a title-versus-mask match, a brutal war that served as the co-main event for CMLL’s 92nd Anniversary card at Arena Mexico in Mexico City this weekend.

MJF got a jump on rival Mistico early, attacking him before the match officially started. Mistico started to bleed heavily not even a minute into the match, as he was run head-first into a post at ringside. Mistico would continue to bleed for the remainder of the match, leaving a gnarly visual both on his body and all around Arena Mexico’s ring.

Mistico remained in the fight by narrowly avoiding a count-out late in the match, rolling back into the ring after eating a nasty small package piledriver onto the apron.

Mistico had his own moments in the bout, like a flashy Mexican Destroyer off the ropes. After putting up with tons of dirty tactics from MJF over the months, Mistico got some payback at one point by giving the AEW star a low-blow while the referee wasn’t looking.

The title-winning sequence saw Mistico score a huge hurricanrana out of the corner before transitioning into his submission finisher, La Mistica.

The payoff for the rivalry between Mistico and MJF has been months in the works. They first met in the ring at AEW Grand Slam Mexico in June, a 16-minute match which resulted in a disqualification loss for MJF after a blatant low blow.

MJF made a surprise appearance at an MLW event weeks later to attack Mistico and affirm that the Luchador remained one of his top targets. The two also had a brief exchange during the Men’s Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All In: Texas, two months back.

The victory on Friday kicked off Mistico’s first singles title run in CMLL since 2009, when he held the World Welterweight Championship for over 700 days. He currently also holds trios titles alongside Mascara Dorada and Neon.

MJF had a brief 50-day reign with the title, first dethroning Averno for the belt last month. He would later defend the title against Zandokan Jr. as well.

Valiente lost his mask in the main event of the night, losing via pinfall to Esfinge after getting caught in a crafty roll-up pin sequence. The pin wrapped up a 16-minute battle between the two and marked Valiente’s first loss in four career Lucha de Apuesta matches.

Participants in the headlining Lucha de Apuesta match were determined in the co-main event, where three teams of rivals faced off in an elimination tag bout. Barbaro Cavernario and Dragon Rojo Jr. were the first to go, then Esfinge and Valiente eliminated Avero and Ultimo Guerrero, confirming that they would face off in a mask vs. mask bout.

A hair vs. hair Lucha de Apuestas match between veterans Rey Bucanero and El Felino had a surprising finish, resulting in both men losing something.

After a physical battle – including a frogsplash off the top and to the outside from Bucanero, 51, and a Razor’s Edge from Felino, 61 – both wrestlers striking eachother with a low blow kick to the groin at the same time caused the bout to end in a double disqualification.

While we expected just one wrestler to have their hair cut due to the stipulation, the draw meant that both men left bald.

Friday certainly wasn’t the first time Felino and Bucanero had competed against each other in such a stipulation. Felino caused Bucanero to lose his hair at the 78th Anniversary Show in 2011, and Bucanero got some revenge with a match three years later.

The dominant tag title reign from Los Hermanos Chavez (Angel de Oro and Niebla Roja) continued early in the night after a competitive matchup against La Escuadra (El Hijo del Vilano III and Vilano III Jr.). La Escuadra came quite close to ending the duo’s 1,336-day reign at one point, making the crowd bite on a near fall after scoring stereo moonsaults. Los Hermanos Chavez eventually put away the challengers with stereo Campanas, a submission they attempted numerous times before finally finding the victory.

Women’s action kicked off the night, as Las Chicas Indomables (La Jarochita and Lluvia) defended their CMLL World Women’s Tag Team Championships in an 11-minute contest. The victory, Las Chicas Indomables’ second time defending the belts since March, received boos from a very pro-Persephone Arena Mexico.
