Hirooki Goto and Callum Newman advanced to the quarterfinals of the New Japan Cup on Friday.
The pair were victorious in their second-round matches in front of 800 people at Kanaoka Park Gym in Osaka.
Goto received a first-round bye, so this was his first match of the tournament. Lee was not expected to go far after just receiving a title match last month at New Beginning in Osaka. The match didn’t have a great atmosphere, but Goto showcased his usual intensity down the stretch after hitting the GTW and planting a PK into Lee’s chest after his opponent smiled. Goto finished him with the GTR.
Callum Newman was victorious against Hartley Jackson. Walker Stewart tried to position Jackson as the sentimental pick after a twenty-five-year career and wrestling longer than Newman has been alive.
Newman’s new skill is flying through rows of empty chairs on the floor and did the spot twice. It looks cool, but I wouldn’t want to be a spot you’re famous for taking in all your matches. Newman kicked out of the Jagged Edge and a piledriver when Zane Jay slid a chair into the ring. The distraction of the referee by the chair opened the door for a low kick and Excalibur for Newman to move on to the next round.
Goto and Newman are set to meet in their quarterfinal match next Tuesday, and the winner goes to the final four.
The second round concludes Saturday when Shota Umino takes on Yujiro Takahashi, and Zack Sabre Jr. faces fellow TMDK member, Ryohei Oiwa.
