Paul Levesque says he knew there was no “malice” in Cody Rhodes’ throne smash in AEW

Paul Levesque and Cody Rhodes addressed an AEW viral moment together for the first time.

Rhodes took an unsubtle shot at Levesque during AEW’s inaugural Double or Nothing event when he took a sledgehammer and smashed a throne during his entrance. The two cleared the air when Levesque appeared on Rhodes’ “What Do You Wanna Talk About” podcast, with the former joking about how small the sledgehammer was.

“I remember when people brought it to me and were showing it to me, I was like, ‘F-ck yeah, alright, good for him.’ That’s the kind of sh-t you do,” Levesque said. “You’re trying to make a name for yourself. You’re trying to get out there. You’re trying to do some cool sh-t, trying to do some different stuff.

“Believe me, if I would have thought there was malice in it, and maybe indirectly there was some at the time, I don’t know, but if I would have thought there was any serious malice in it, I would have called you and said, ‘Hey dude, are we OK?’ Because I was so close to your dad, but I always felt a connection to you. And when you were here, it was difficult for me when you left because I couldn’t go over the top like, ‘Dude, get the f-ck out of here and go out there and make a name for yourself and make yourself desirable and we’ll f-cking come chasing after you and bring you back.’ Sometimes you got to get out of the rut you’re in. You just go to bite it off and go in a different direction, make a left turn. It was so difficult but at that time, I remember thinking, alright, that’s getting out there. That’s being and making a statement.”

Rhodes added that Levesque told him to “go rattle the cages,” and he revealed that after he won the Ring of Honor championship, one of the first people he texted was Levesque, who noted that he was cheering on Rhodes while he was outside of WWE.

Of course, Rhodes would leave AEW in 2022 and return to WWE, where he is the current Undisputed Champion heading into WrestleMania 42.
