AEW Dynamite 4/29 Results: Darby retains, will face Kevin Knight next week

AEW Dynamite Results

TNT Championship

AEW Dynamite from Fairfax kicked off with the TNT Championship match between Kevin Knight and MJF. MJF started off by ramming Knight’s hip into the steel steps, followed by a powerbomb on the ringside barrier. Knight responded by taking it to MJF, utilizing his high-flying maneuvers as MJF continued to take powders to the outside. MJF went for a Heatseeker but was countered and nearly picked up the win with a pop-up Cutter. Knight then tweaked his knee on a moonsault reversal onto his feet, and MJF quickly capitalized on the injury, executing a Panama Sunrise as Knight collapsed while trying to charge the challenger. 

 

After a commercial break, MJF had Knight in a single-leg Boston Crab, screaming at Knight to tap. Kevin Knight broke the hold and hit the UFO Splash, but could not make the cover due to his knee. MJF grabbed the TNT title and used the distraction to take out the Dynamite Diamond Ring, but was hit with a low blow from Knight to pick up the win. MJF attacked Knight after the match when suddenly Darby Allin rappelled down from the arena ceiling and hit him with the Scorpion Death Drop.

MJF got on the mic, calling Allin and Knight cheaters. MJF demanded a rematch with Darby, and Darby said that if he survives his match with Brody King tonight, Kevin Knight deserves a shot next week. This brought out the aforementioned King, who got into MJF’s face and beelined to the ring. King told Darby he wouldn’t survive tonight, and next week, Kevin Knight would be facing him as champion.

 

Adam Copeland and Christian Cage (who said his arm was fine) were interviewed backstage, and they accepted the “I Quit” stipulation for their rematch with FTR. 

Brawling Birds “In Action”

Next up was The Brawling Birds of Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor, taking on Emily Jaye and Jordan Blade. Hayter and Windsor made short work of their opponents, hitting Two Birds, One Stone in less than ninety seconds, picking up the win. After the match, Skye Blue and Thekla cut a backstage promo, calling Hayter and Windsor “dumb bitches” and Skye Blue saying Persephone getting misted was their fault, but maybe it would open her eyes.

International Championship

Next was the second of four title matches on the night, with Ace Austin challenging International Champion Kazuchika Okada. Austin seemed to have Okada’s number as the match began, playing with Okada by Back squatting him before hitting him with a fireman’s carry slam. Finally, Okada nailed Austin with a DDT on the outside and took control of the match.

After an ad break, Austin mounted a comeback, hitting a Fosberry Flop on Okada and followed it up with a jumping leg drop from the top rope to the back of Okada’s neck. Okada responded by hitting Austin in the face with a crazy-looking dropkick. Finally, Okada hit a Tombstone and the Rainmaker for the win. After the match, Juice Robinson and Mark Davis had some words, and then Takeshita appeared, motioning to the Double or Nothing graphic, a nod to their upcoming match. 

A vignette aired showing someone beating people bloody in an old-timey Western town. It was then revealed to be Swerve Strickland, who burned a Bandido “Wanted” poster while smiling into the camera.  

A backstage video aired with Will Ospreay approaching the Death Riders and admitting he wasn’t cleared, but he was still going to Japan for a big title match. Moxley squealed about Ospreay’s loyalty, then gave him a motivational speech, telling him to get rid of the “excess baggage.” Mox said he would see this through to the end, and Ospreay agreed. It appeared they were about to start training in a dingy hallway when Moxley said the camera could not continue. 

Copeland & Cage vs. RPG Vice

The next match saw Christian Cage and Adam Copeland taking on Trent Beretta and Rocky Romero, with FTR and Stokely at ringside. It was noted that this was the first time Cage and Copeland had ever teamed on Dynamite, as they controlled the early part of the match. As expected, Dax and Cash got involved, distracting Christian. The Conglomeration then appeared at ringside, hitting Stokely with a popcorn bucket and then brawling them to the back. 

After the commercial, RPG Vice remained in control, focusing on Cage’s injured arm. Cage finally made the hot tag to Copeland, who took it to Romero. Cage and Copeland used their tag team specialty to hit an assisted Code Red to Beretta for a two count. Beretta dodged a spear and attempted to pin Copeland with his feet on the ropes, but Referee Rick Knox caught him. Copeland popped Beretta up, and Cage caught him with a mid-air spear for the win. After the match, Christian ripped the crossbar off the chair, and Copeland put it in Beretta’s mouth, applying a Cross face. Cage stuck a mic in Beretta’s mouth, and he said, “I quit.” 

Footage from earlier in the day showed The Demand attacking Jericho. Jericho told Ricochet, “Eat shit, bald,” and the three left him lying after Ricochet did a moonsault over him, saying he wasn’t worth it. 

Women’s Tag Team Championship

Next was the third of four title matches, this time seeing Divind Dominion defend against Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander. Early in the match, Megan Bayne seemed to struggle to throw Shida confidently, but recovered and made it look like she meant to do so. Shida picked up her kendo stick, but Statlander stopped her. Shida then kicked Statlander in the stomach and suplexed her into Bayne in the corner. Statlander seemed annoyed, but the match continued.

The champions took control going into the ad break, and upon return, Statlander made the hot tag to Shida. SHida went back and forth with Lena Kross, eventually nailing both Kross and Bayne with a single knee strike. Statlander then got double-teamed by the champions, but then reversed things, hitting both women with a 450 as they were stacked on the mat. Things broke down from there as all four competitors battled in the ring. The finish saw Shida blind-tag herself in and get hit with the Double Chokeslam and take the pinfall.

Backstage, MJF interrupted an Andrade promo, blaming him for not taking out Darby Allin a few weeks ago. The two started shoving each other, but Don Callis stopped them, saying they needed to focus on business. 

Rush “In Action”

Next, Rush took on Steven Fuerte, defeating him with the Horns in under two minutes. 

The Opps were interviewed backstage, with Samoa Joe hyping up all of their members, including their newest member, Anthony Bowens. Joe noted that Hook would try to capture the TNT Championship this weekend on Collision. Samoa Joe addressed Will Ospreay, saying that they were the ones who had his back with the Death Riders not long ago. Joe offered Ospreay a choice between The Death Riders and The Opps. 

Stokely and FTR issued a challenge for Double Jeopardy next week: if they win, they get a Trios title shot; if they lose, The Conglomeration gets a Tag title shot. Stokely revealed that he would not be FTR’s third, but instead, it would be Tommaso Ciampa. 

AEW Championship

The main event of the evening was Darby Allin defending his AEW World Championship against Brody King. Footage was shown of Darby with Travis Pastrana, wearing the AEW title while doing a crazy stunt on the back of a 4×4. The crowd chanted “Fuck Ice” as the bell rang and Darby and Brody shook hands before immediately kicking into high gear. Early on, Darby hit an Avalanche Code Red, but Brody was able to kick out. Darby then dove onto Brody on the outside but simply bounced off him. 

After the final commercial of the night, Brody’s onslaught on Darby continued, putting him through the top piece of the announce table propped up at ringside. In the meantime, both Kevin Knight and MJF were seen watching the match with keen interest. Darby then hit another Code Red, this time on the announce desk. 

Brody and Darby got back in the ring, and Brody hit the Cannonball, followed by two lariats for two quick consecutive near falls. King then threw Darby out of the ring, with Darby nailing one of the cameramen on his way down. Brody attempted another cannonball but went clear through the ringside barricade.

Darby then removed the mat on the outside and powerbombed Brody onto the concrete. Allin then hit the Coffin Drop to the outside as well. Brody finally rolled back into the ring only to be hit with another pair of Coffin Drops immediately as Darby pinned Brody to retain. Darby and Brody shook hands as the show went off the air, with Darby staring down Kevin Knight in the crowd.
