MJF is once again AEW World Champion.

Avenging his recent loss against Darby Allin, MJF regained AEW’s top men’s title, beginning his third reign with the belt. The 24-minute victory headlined this year’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view from the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York City.

Allin attempted to close the show early, trying three times in a row to pin MJF with a side-headlock takeover to start the match. MJF gained control after Allin took a nasty spill to the outside, landing head-first on the mat after a tope suicida missed. MJF followed up with a powerbomb onto the ring apron.

MJF’s biggest moment in the match was arguably when he stood up a steel step on its side, then delivered a small-package piledriver onto it. Allin got the biggest air on the card, scaling AEW’s New York scaffold-inspired stage for a massive Coffin Drop through a table. Allin sported a cut on the back of his head after the move.

Allin locked in a Scorpion Deathlock late in the match, but the damage he took earlier in the bout and through his active title reign as a whole started to add up. Allin collapsed, letting the submission go and giving MJF room to capitalize.

Allin suddenly reversed a move from MJF and looked to possibly make a comeback, hitting a Scorpion Deathdrop then trying for a Coffin Drop.

But, MJF knocked Allin off-balance in the ropes to avoid the Coffin Drop, then hit an Avalanche Tombstone Piledriver for the pinfall victory.

Allin gained the AEW World Championship on an episode of Dynamite last month, scoring a stunning two-minute victory to dethrone MJF. He then went on a run that, despite being one of the shorter campaigns in the title’s history, will most likely be remembered as one of the highest quality.

Allin defended the title a staggering seven times within just a few weeks, taking down names like Konosuke Takeshita, Tommaso Ciampa, Brody King, and PAC. He refused to face MJF in a rematch, only allowing a second meeting to occur if the former champ was able to put something on the line as well.

Eventually, per Allin’s wishes, it was MJF’s hair that was wagered against his title. A barber shop set was placed on-stage as part of Sunday’s show, preparing for a situation where MJF’s head would have to go bald. However, because of the result, it went unused.

The win means MJF is now just one of two wrestlers to have held the AEW World Championship three times or more. He is in rarified air, with Jon Moxley being the only other talent to achieve such a feat.

Double or Nothing ended with a twist, as TNT Champion Kevin Knight appeared and delivered a UFO Splash to Allin, who was being taken away on a stretcher. Knight has been a pure babyface since joining the AEW roster over a year ago, although that clearly changed on Sunday.
