SummerSlam Fallout

Cody Rhodes came out to open the show, and he immediately called out Randy Orton. The crowd chanted, “Randy,” but they also sang for Cody when it was clear Orton wasn’t coming out. Cody wanted to talk about “memories.” He mentioned Dory Funk Jr. before calling back to WrestleMania 40 and his loss to CM Punk at SummerSlam. He admitted that he doesn’t think Punk knew Orton could come in and hit him with an RKO, and Punk’s music played. Punk asked Cody if he wanted to ask him something. Cody admitted that he didn’t, but he asked if Punk knew Orton would interfere in their match. The crowd chanted, “Yes,” but Punk said no. Punk said it hurt that Cody would ask that question, but he understood. He suggested that he and Cody go “Two Man Power Trip” and go back and find Orton to kick his ass. Cody told Punk no and noted they have unfinished business. As Cody left, Punk agreed and told Cody to say when.

Kevin Owens’ music played, and Cody handed the mic to him. Owens and Punk started arguing off-mic, and it seemed like Owens wasn’t about Punk guaranteeing Cody a rematch. The camera was focused on the pair, so it looked like Nick Aldis came out of nowhere. Owens and Punk told Aldis they were professionals, as a group of producers and referees stood outside. Punk asked Owens if he was ready for his title match, and Owens retorted that he wrestled in shorts, not pants. However, he admitted that all he’s wanted to do for the past 17 months is wrestle. He talked about how he didn’t choose for his career to potentially end, but he’s proved people wrong his entire career. The crowd gave him a “you still got it” chant, and Owens replied that he never lost it.

Owens added that Punk has proven him right. He heard from others that he should give Punk a second chance because he’s changed and is a new guy, but he never bought it. He knows who Punk is. Punk showed his arrogance when he gave Cody a title shot even though he’s the No. 1 contender. However, he’s not surprised that Punk is looking past him. He thinks he’s better than him, than everyone. Owens said Punk is the same arrogant sociopath that he’s known him to be.

Punk got closer to Owens because he wanted him to hear him. Punk said calling himself the best in the world is what got him to the dance. It’s why people chant his name and why they still chanted his name when he was gone for 10 years. He said some people might not like that, but he backs it up, and the title shows it. He told Owens why he couldn’t appreciate that because he benefited from what he said and did. He noted that he was called “skinny fat” and asked Owens if WWE actually was looking at him, gesturing to his body. Owens noted that it’s been 10 years since he was last world champion and would love nothing more than to win it while also humbling Punk and beating his ass. Punk told Owens that it’s good to have impossible dreams. He has them, too, and sometimes, they scare him. And he can see Owens is scared. He told Owens to practice gratitude because if it wasn’t for him, he wouldn’t be here. He told Owens that he’d still be working the 9-5 that he hates, be a weekend warrior on the indies, and call him for WWE tickets for his son. He added that he doesn’t think he’s the best in the world; he knows it and tells Owens to look at himself.

Owens said he should be grateful to Punk for being a trailblazer and opening doors. However, he also showed him what not to do, who not to become, and how not to treat others. He said he didn’t want to be someone with an inflated ego that they believe they’re the best in the world. He wondered if Punk was lonely on the pedestal that he’s put himself on. He thanked Punk for showing him how not to let the business turn him into a “miserable piece of shit like you.” That line got to Punk, and he and Owens got face to face, as Aldis and company separated them.

Cathy Kelly was backstage with Charlotte Flair, and she asked her what it is about Jade Cargill that has gotten under her skin for the past few months. Charlotte clarified that it’s been years. She noted the presence Jade came into WWE with years ago, but now, she’s not fighting for herself. She’s fighting for Alexa Bliss, and there will be two alphas in the ring tonight, so she told Jade to come alone.

United States Championship: Baron Corbin (c) vs. Trick Williams

Trick cut a promo in the back about how Baron cheated and how he didn’t have what it took to beat him. He started the match off quickly and took it to Baron on the outside. Baron was in control after the ad break, getting a ton of boos from the crowd. Trick got a nearfall with Book End and later caught Corbin with the Trick Shot, but Corbin got his hand on the ropes. While the referee was looking the other way, Corbin nailed Trick with the title to retain.

Unfriendly Reunion

Sami Zayn and Aldis were backstage, and Sami congratulated Aldis on his match with Gunther, admitting that he cried when his kid went into the ring. He asked Aldis if he would congratulate him about SummerSlam. Aldis said, “Here it comes,” and Sami snapped. He asked Aldis how many times he expected him to stand on the sidelines while he screws him. He pointed out that he’d still be WWE Champion if it wasn’t for Aldis finding Punk at the 11th hour. He added that he’d be the No. 1 contender if he, at the 11th hour, didn’t add Gunther and Owens to the match, the latter of which felt like on purpose to Sami. Owens arrived, and Aldis left to let the two handle their unfinished business. Before he left, Owens told Aldis he wanted his title match in Toronto on Aug. 21.

Sami welcomed Owens back, but Owens noted that it didn’t sound sincere. Sami told Owens that no one but him is happier that he’s back. He noted that he’s thought for over a year and a half about whether or not their last match in Toronto was their last. Sami told Owens that he should acknowledge that his return came at his expense and cost him a title shot. Owens admitted that, and Sami asked for an apology, which Owens obliged. Owens pointed out that if the roles were reversed, Sami would have done the same thing. Owens added that Phil implied that he didn’t earn his spot, but he won his last match against one of the guys in the No. 1 contender’s match, which was Sami, who admitted that he’d love to see Owens as WWE Champion rather than Punk and offered to help however he could. Owens appreciated it, but he wanted to do it on his own. Sami told Owens not to expect him to stop chasing what he wants just because it’s also what he wants.

Cathy was backstage with Corbin, who took offense to her using the word “upset.” He said everyone doubting him has been the story of his career, and he hopes those people feel stupid. He said Trick would never ever get his hands on that title and added that no one in the locker room would get their hands on the title. Carmelo Hayes was off-screen and slammed Corbin into the security doors. He told Corbin that he talked to Aldis, and he has a United States Title match next week in his hometown of Boston.

Fatal Celebration

Chelsea Green came out to celebrate her title victory. She thanked the fans and herself for making her WWE Women’s Champion. She also thanked Tiffany Stratton, who came out in matching gear. Chelsea apologized for what happened at SummerSlam and said their friendship is stronger than that. She wanted to make a toast to “strong female friendship.” Tiffany cut her off, saying she wanted to talk to her about something, but Fatal Influence interrupted. Jacy Jayne said that it was enough of this “cringey little soap opera.” Jacy blamed Tiffany because if it wasn’t for her, she’d be in the ladder match and be WWE Women’s Champion. Lainey Reid added that all of Fatal Influence would be draped in gold. Fallon Henley mocked Chelsea Green for thinking she deserves the title. Green asked if they could put a pin on their conversation, so she could celebrate. Jacy said that since Tiffany took away her chance at the title, she should take away what she loves the most, her United States Championship, to make her “Tiffy No Titles.” Stratton said she’d give her a title match next week if they put the tag belts on the line tonight. After a huddle, they accepted.

Women’s Tag Team Championship: Fatal Influence (c) vs. Chelsea Green & Tiffany Stratton

Chelsea got things started with Lainey, baiting her to chase her outside. Tiffany had Fatal Influence hanging on the second rope, and she and Chelsea both hit a double knee strike. They then hit stereo tope suicidas into a picture-in-picture ad break, where Fatal Influence had control of Green. Chelsea found an opening after hitting Fallon off the top rope and fighting off Lainey. Stratton got the hot tag, and after taking out Fallon, she hit the Cartwheel Alabama Slam. She hit the Swanton Bomb, but Fallon nailed her with a forearm. Chelsea tagged herself in and baited Fallon to the outside. Lainey countered Unprettier, but Chelsea cut Lainey off in the corner and tossed her aside. Jacy went after Stratton, and Chelsea went for the save. Jacy hit Rolling Encore on Chelsea, and Fatal Influence hit Fatal Flaw for the win.

After the match, The Irresistible Forces attacked Stratton and Green. Nia Jax took Green’s title and celebrated over Green while dancing with it.

Kelly was backstage with Damian Priest, asking about the MFTs and Haku. Priest pointed out it’s the same thing over and over: They beat the MFTs for the titles, then they jump them, then they beat them again and they jump them again. He said things are different with Haku, but he’s not scared. The War Raiders confronted Priest about how they’ve been chasing them down for weeks. They said they will be double champions and also handle the MFTs. R-Truth then confronted them, asking if they should be scared of some luchadors, Faces of Fear, the Road Warriors or the Legion of Doom, Hank and Animal, which Priest pointed out are the same people. Truth said he’ll talk to Aldis about putting up their titles next week against The War Raiders and MFTs. Erik and Ivar were happy about that, but Priest pointed out that only their titles are on the line, and Truth seemed to have forgotten to mention the AAA Tag Titles.

Legend Killer 2.0

Randy Orton came out to full support from the fans. Before he could talk, Cody came out and entered the ring, but Orton escaped. Cody asked Orton what he was waiting on. It’s been 100 days, and they have to settle things in the ring. Orton did two fake outs as Aldis and company came out. Cody said Orton owed him an explanation. Orton questioned that idea and said Cody was crazy, and he didn’t owe him jack. Orton told Cody he asked for this. He said during the road to WrestleMania, he wanted the best of Randy Orton; he permitted him to be the best Randy Orton. He called Cody a “cocky, arrogant son of a bitch,” which got cheers from the crowd. Orton said he played Cody’s game at WrestleMania 42, and in return, Cody beat him, but deep down, something snapped. The voices came back in Orton’s head, and they told him to do whatever it took to put him on all fours and kick him in the face as hard as he could. He realized that the best version of Randy Orton wasn’t going to bring home No. 15, but the worst version of Orton can and will. He doesn’t care who has the title, but he knows it won’t be Cody because as long as there is air in his lungs, he’ll make sure Cody is never ever ever WWE Champion. Cody said he’s no longer under the standards of the WWE Championship, meaning he doesn’t have to be the good guy anymore. He noted that Randy is the Legend Killer, but he’s the last legend left, so he asked Orton, “Who kills you?”

Sami was backstage ranting at Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae. Sami admitted he’s jealous of Owens because he can look Punk in the eyes and tell him what a fraud he is. Punk was standing behind him and asked if they were still doing this: Sami talking trash when he’s not around. He noted that Owens has the decency to say what he wants to his face. Sami told Punk that he’s a fraud and his days are numbered. Sami pointed to the broken bone in his hand. Punk laughed at Sami and said that if he had taken him out, he would have done it in Chicago. It sounded like there was a grunt from Gargano, as Punk said that Gargano and Candice would get title shots before Sami would. Sami yelled at Gargano for not doing anything while Punk bemiddled them, and Candice stood up for Gargano.

Jade and the Baddies were backstage, and Kelly wanted to ask about Charlotte, but B-Fab cut her off, and she and Michin put over Jade. Cargill said she’d put an end to the disrespect by putting down that ass.

Nikki Bella was sitting in the locker room, talking about how hard it’s been for her to be supportive. She said she made an unselfish call to let Paige take her spot at WrestleMania, and Paige paid that back by losing the tag titles. She talked about how nice she and Brie have been, but the SummerSlam loss was the final straw. Nikki blamed Paige for Brie’s injury and vowed to make sure Paige felt the same pain.

Shinsuke Nakamura cut a promo on the MFTs. He noted they have a new leader, but they also have past enemies. He said they’re wrong to remember who they are because they need to remember who he is. He said he’s back, and this time, he won’t be alone. He said he’s starting a war, and he’s no longer a one-man army. He gave them a warning that they are running out of time.

Jade Cargill vs. Charlotte Flair

After a staredown, there was an intense lock-up that went outside, and Jade drove Charlotte to the apron. She knocked Charlotte down and talked trash, and Charlotte kipped up and started to wear Jade down. She had Jade in the Queen’s Decree, but Jade carried Charlotte on her shoulders and slammed her on the announce desk. She dumped Charlotte over the barricade, taking it to a PiP ad break. Jade continued to wear Charlotte down when she got back in the ring. Charlotte worked her way out of a chinlock, but Jade caught her with a spinebuster for a two-count. Charlotte avoided Jade in the corner and hit a German Suplex. Both women traded strikes, and Jade countered the walkover clothesline with a boot for a nearfall. Charlotte went over the top in the corner and landed the Queen’s Boot. She went for a crossbody, but Jade reversed it into a pin. Charlotte reversed a jackknife pin, but Jade went for the kitchen sink and a thrust kick. She hit a torture rack bomb for another nearfall. Jade went up top, and Charlotte tried to hurricanrana her, but Jade caught her for the avalanche powerbomb for another two-count. Jade talked trash to Charlotte, and they slapped each other. Jade’s leg got caught on the ropes, and Charlotte took advantage, locking in the Figure Eight. The Baddies came out, and Michin broke up the hold. Alexa Bliss then came out in a brace and with Lily the doll. The lights went out, and Tatum Paxley was on the top rope and hit a crossbody on the Baddies. Charlotte hit Sister Abigail, followed up by a Natural Selection off the second rope.
