Can They Coexist?

AEW Dynamite from Norfolk, VA, kicked off with Renee Paquette interviewing Adam Copeland, Christian Cage, Darby Allin, and Steve Borden. Darby told Christian it wasn’t over between them, and Cage responded that his TNT title reign was better. Adam Copeland wondered aloud if they were good for tonight, and they walked off. 

FTR, Kevin Knight, Kyle Fletcher, and Don Callis cut a backstage promo talking about how Fletcher and Knight beat the Young Bucks, and Stokely said they could talk about a title match after FTR wins the Tag titles back at All Out. This all led directly into the opening match.

8-Man Tag Team Match

The action on Dynamite kicked off with Adam Copeland, Christian Cage, Darby Allin, and Steve Borden taking on FTR, Kevin Knight, and Kyle Fletcher. Early in the match, Christian and Darby traded off tags as both men wanted in on the action. Shortly thereafter, things broke down, and all eight men brawled. During a commercial break, Darby’s Coffin Drop was caught on the floor, and he was Powerbombed onto the ring apron for his efforts. Don Callis got involved, gouging Darby’s eyes, and the match built into a hot tag to Borden. The heels gained control, and all four hit top-rope maneuvers on him, but Copeland made the save before the three-count. Dax attempted the Scorpion Death Lock, but Borden pushed out, allowing Christian to hit Dax with a chair behind the referee’s back.

Copeland speared Dax and Borden, and Darby hit the double-team Coffin Death Drop for the win. After the match, Christian tried to pose with Darby’s TNT title, but Darby snatched it back. 

Jon Moxley (backed by Pac and Gabe Kidd in Death Riders shirts) cut a backstage promo, advising Will Ospreay to disabuse himself of the notion that any belt around anyone’s waist makes them the best, because it doesn’t. Mox said he never wanted Ospreay to follow him; he wanted him to lead. Kidd suggested they take Ospreay out tonight instead of waiting until All Out. Pac said they would not let Ospreay off the hook and turned to stare at Mox when he said it. 

A promo package aired ahead of the Chicago Street Fight between Brawling Birds and Divine Dominion. 

Jericho vs. Wayne

Next up, Jericho took on Nick Wayne after they argued backstage over a Puka shell necklace. Early in the match, Wayne spat into Jericho’s face, leading to a succession of chops on Wayne in the corner. The two fought out to the apron, where Jericho hit Wayne with a Death Valley Driver. Wayne tried a Destroyer on Jericho, but it didn’t work, and Jericho didn’t rotate through it.

After an ad break, the two continued fighting on the outside, with Wayne hitting a Senton as Jericho lay prone on the apron. Jericho responded with a Codebreaker for a two-count. Jericho went for the Walls of Jericho, but Wayne grabbed the referee’s ankle to escape. He then hit two consecutive Hurricanranas on Wayne and went for the Judas Kiss but missed. Wayne hit Wayne’s World, but Jericho kicked out. 

Jericho ripped off the Puka shell necklace, and Wayne freaked out, allowing Jericho to catch him with a piu. Nick kept freaking out about the necklace after the match, and Jericho tried to shake his hand. Wayne turned him down, then attacked Jericho with the Puka necklace as he walked away. Wayne finished by hitting him with a chair. Everything about this was awful, but at least Wayne committed to the bit. 

Excalibur announced that Mercedes Moné was not cleared to wrestle at All Out and instead, she would face either Willow Nightingale or Thekla at WrestleDream in October. Both Willow and Thekla cut promos ahead of their newly announced match. 

Will Ospreay, Andrade, and Francesco Akira were interviewed backstage ahead of their match against The Death Riders. Ospreay said it was awkward that Callum Newman keeps inviting people into United Empire, and that Andrade is now part of it. Ospreay pointed out that Andrade had the contract for his world title shot, but Andrade said they were on the same team tonight. Akira cut a promo in Italian, and Ospreay said he spoke perfect Italian and didn’t understand. Akira said in English, “Let’s kick the shit out of the Death Riders,” and Ospreay apologized for the curse and said he’d “pay the fine”. 

#1 Contenders Trios Match

The next match featured Hangman & Brodido taking on The Conglomeration, with the winners going on to face Swerve & the New Level at All Out for the Trios titles. Excalibur noted that Hangman & Brodido had never been pinned or submitted for the Trios titles. At this point, Excalibur accidentally called them “New Day” as the crowd chanted Fuck Ice. Both teams were evenly matched as they went at it. At one point, Cassidy put up his hands, and Brody King chopped them, hurting Cassidy’s hands. 

After a commercial, King stacked O’Reilly and Strong in the corner and hit them both with a Cannonball. Hangman set up for a Buckshot Lariat on Cassidy but was pulled off the apron and dropped on the barricade. Strong and Hangman were tagged in, and Hangman went for the Deadeye, but Cassidy jumped on his back like he was riding a Cowboy. Hangman returned the favor on Cassidy’s back but got a clothesline from Roddy for his efforts. Hangman caught Strong out of nowhere with a Buckshot Lariat for the win. The Good, The Bad, y El Guapo go on to face Swerve and New Level at All Out. 

Ciampa and Perry Call Their Respective Shots

Tommaso Ciampa squashed Myles Hawkins in under a minute, but the story here was that, during an inset promo, he declared he wanted to face Kazuchika Okada for the International title at All Out. 

Swerve and The New Level came out for what seemed like an in-ring interview with Tony Schiavone, but The Demand jumped them ahead of their title match next week. The champions tried to fight back but were ultimately left lying by the challengers. 

Jack Perry cut a promo from some kind of tunnel about how he has lost to former AEW champions, but he learned something every time and is inching closer to his ultimate dream of becoming AEW Champion. Perry called out Samoa Joe, asking him to teach him something. He then revealed he had painted “Joe is Gonna Kill You” inside the tunnel. 

 

Lena Kross vs. Jamie Hayter

Next, Divine Dominion’s “Colossal” Lena Kross took on The Brawling Birds’ Jamie Hayter. Kross jumped Hayter before the bell, just after Renee Paquette read a profanity-laden quote from Alex Windsor ahead of their Chicago Street Fight at All Out. Early in the match, Kross powerbombed Hayter on the apron.

After an ad break, Hayter was fighting from underneath against the larger Kross. Kross stopped the Hayterade and hit Hayter with a German Suplex. The two exchanged running knees for near falls, and the momentum went back and forth until Megan Baynes appeared from the crowd, distracted the referee, and allowed Kross to hit Hayter with a pipe she grabbed from under the ring. Kross picked up the win after a Jackhammer. After the match, Windsor ran the challengers off before they could inflict any more damage on Hayter. 

An Andrade promo package aired, highlighting Andrade’s family history in the wrestling business and his claim that it was his destiny to win a world title. It was then announced that Saturday on Collision, he would defend the National Championship against Daniel Garcia. 

Renee Paquette interviewed Okada backstage, and Okada accepted Ciampa’s challenge for All Out, calling him a bitch. Ciampa jumped Okada and hit him with a running knee. Ciampa screamed that he wanted the Psycho Killer vs. The Rainmaker and called Okada a bitch.

Death Riders & Gabe Kidd vs. Ospreay, Andrade, & Akira

The main event of the evening saw Will Ospreay teaming with Andrade and Akira to take on Jon Moxley, Pac, and Gabe Kidd. Kidd was named separately from The Death Riders despite wearing D-Riders gear. Andrade entered to his previous theme instead of his newer one.
