Davey Richards “happy” to be with MLW for the long-term.
As a part of the 2021 MLW Open Draft, Davey Richards joined the organization and made his debut on July 10th at the Battle Riot III show in Philadelphia. Richards is coming off of winning the Opera Cup tournament and he appeared on Busted Open Radio to recap his year in wrestling.
Richards explained why MLW was the right fit for him over the other companies that reached out. He shared that three or four months into his run with MLW, he was offered a two-year contract extension and is happy to be with the organization long-term.
So, when I… when I left wrestling, I had gotten into medical school so I’m like, ‘Man, I’m gonna be set for life. I’m gonna be a doctor,’ you know? And that’s great and then there was something definitely missing and that’s where I know I’m right when I say that. If you get it, no explanation needed, you know the rest. There was something missing and then there’s this show called Cobra Kai I was watching with my wife and there’s this scene where [the narrator says], ‘God doesn’t give people things he doesn’t want them to use’ and I was like, ‘Man, I gotta go back and finish this my way.’ There’s stuff left in the basement, to quote Rocky, and so IMPACT reached out and AEW reached out and MLW reached out and the AEW guys were awesome. Their schedule was a little bit difficult for me. One, I’m a dad and two, I do have another career and so MLW reached out and they were great and I’m really glad I made that decision and I didn’t really know much about ‘em. I’m gonna be completely candid with you and just the more we talked, the more it just became a natural fit and then I think three months in, maybe four months in, they offered me a two-year contract extension and it was like, ‘No problem’ so, I’m very happy to be with them for the long term.
I hope things keep going as well as they are now. It’s one of those things where it’s so good, you know, it’s like something, but you know, wrestling as a whole for me, since I’ve come back has been so positive and great that I’m just… I’m internally in debt so it’s been great.
Back in August, Richards said he initially signed a one-year deal with MLW and planned to renegotiate towards the end of that deal.
On top of his role as an in-ring talent, Richards started working as an agent and his first go-around was at the latest MLW tapings. He admitted that he was nervous and it’s something he is still getting accustom to.
Yeah, they [MLW] asked me about being an agent and yeah, so my first match I agented was last tapings and my match with TJP for the Opera Cup, I wasn’t so nervous about that because TJ’s just so good and [we’ve] wrestled a million times but my first time agenting a match, I was like, ‘Oh God.’ I was so nervous because I didn’t wanna have someone have a great match and screw up on account of me so, so yeah. It’s definitely something I’m learning and I’m really thankful for the opportunity to do it.
Richards is scheduled for PWG’s 2022 Battle of Los Angeles tournament. He is one of 16 talents competing in the tourney that kicks off January 29th.
