The deal between WWE and Indiana Sports Corp brought the Royal Rumble to Indianapolis and there are going to be WrestleMania and SummerSlam events in the city. During the Kickoff show, Michael Cole mentioned that WrestleMania will be in the city in ‘a couple of years.’

There was a Ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Championship that saw Cody Rhodes defend against Kevin Owens. Rhodes retained over Owens. There was a spot when Owens gave Rhodes a Fisherman Buster onto a ladder. Both talents were laid out and referees, agents and General Manager Nick Aldis came out to check on them. Sami Zayn appeared and checked on Owens. All the aforementioned parties stayed at ringside. A referee held Zayn back as Rhodes was beating up a bloodied Owens. Rhodes gave an Alabama Slam to Owens through a ladder and it folded Owens up. Cody went on to climb the ladder and pulled his title and the Winged Eagle Title down.

Stephanie McMahon started the show off and thanked the crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium for making it the biggest Royal Rumble ever. There was an announced attendance of 70,347. During Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque’s post-show press conference session, an on-screen graphic popped up which promoted 65,470 in attendance.

Among the notable names in attendance were The Godfather, Mickie James, Kurt Angle, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman, Stephen Amell, Ron Simmons, Rick Steiner, Rob Van Dam, Katie Forbes, Belal Muhammad, John Mellencamp, Tyrese Haliburton and O’Shea Jackson Jr.

John Cena returned to Kai Cenat’s stream prior to the men’s Royal Rumble. Cenat was streaming live from Lucas Oil Stadium.
