Joe Hendry sends message to Trick Williams ahead of Slammiversary match

The latest episode of NXT, which was taped last week in the Orlando Performance Center, started with a recap of the biggest moments from the previous show. Most notably: Channing Lorenzo won the NXT Heritage Cup, Ethan Page is still beefing with Ricky Saints, Trick Williams defended his TNA belt, and Jordynne Grace won a #1 contenders match for the NXT Women’s Championship, a bout she’ll get at Evolution.

Inside the Performance Center, singles action between Wes Lee and TNA’s Joe Hendry kicked off the show. Trick Williams, who will take on Hendry at TNA Slammiversary later this month in a three-way also involving Mike Santana, was on commentary at ringside.

Lee sent Hendry out of the ring early on with a hurricanrana, then followed up with a baseball slide. Lee tried to land another move while at ringside, but Hendry countered with a huge clothesline that turned him inside out. Hendry stared down Williams as the show went to a break.

Lee’s helpers, Tyriek Igwe and Tyson Dupont, gave Lee an advantage during the match. The tag duo distracted Hendry at ringside, allowing Lee to give him a tope suicida to the outside. Back in the ring, Lee got a near fall for an impressive splash off the top.

Hendry started to mount a comeback, reversing a DDT into a suplex. He threw Lee into the ropes for a clothesline, then a big fallaway slam. Lee avoided a Standing Ovation, instead beginning a striking sequence. Hendry caught Lee and lifted him up for a slam. Hendry tried for a pin attempt, but had it broken by Lee’s helpers, who put his leg on the bottom rope.

TNA’s Mike Santana appeared at ringside to take out Igwe and Dupont, preventing any more antics. Hendry then connected with his Standing Ovation upon a second attempt, securing him a pinfall win.

A clip played from last week, where Tatum Paxley asked Sol Ruca and Zaria why she was snatched from ringside while cornering Izzi Dame. They explained that they were looking out for her.

An angry Dame walked into the frame, frustrated with what Ruca and Zaria did. “I may have lost the match, but I feel like I won your friendship,” Dame said to Paxley, to try and get her into The Culling. A frustrated Zaria left the shot. Dame said that she thinks her and Paxley make a good team. “I think she’s right,” Paxley said before leaving. These duos would face off later in the episode.

Luca Crusifino is on his own

Luca Crusifino came to the ring with the hope of putting Tony D’Angelo’s suspicions about him to rest. D’Angelo walked out skeptical, saying that Crusifino caused him to lose his Heritage Cup match last week (he did, just not intentionally).

Crusifino talked about his past with D’Angelo to show that he’s loyal: Dropping out of college early, turning down job opportunities to be with The Family in WWE. As he was trying to explain his loyalty, Heritage Cup Champion Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo came out.

“Stacks, shut the hell up,” Crusifino said. “You’re not part of this family. This is between me and my family.”

“Yeah, Stacks. This is between me and my con-,” D’Angelo was cut off, as Crusifino suddenly struck him in the head. Stacks came into the ring and put an arm around Crusifino, thinking he had found a new ally. But he, too, found himself laid out by a punch to the head just moments later.

“My loyalty lies with Luca Crusifino,” Luca said as he left the ring.

Backstage, Oba Femi was asked who he preferred to win in the #1 contenders match between Yoshiki Inamura and Jasper Troy tonight. Inamura entered the shot and said he will show him grit and tenacity with his performance.

Myles Borne overcomes Lexis King in singles action

After a hostile back-and-forth backstage on last week’s episode, Myles Borne and Lexis King faced off in singles action on tonight’s card. This was the first time we’ve seen Borne in the ring since he fought his way out of the No Quarter Catch Crew.

King had a near fall early on with a superplex. Borne started to mount a comeback after a slap from King enraged him. He got a two-count for an Olympic slam. He lifted King up for a follow-up move, but King raked the eyes to escape. After taking a superkick, Borne escaped a Coronation attempt and hit a massive dropkick to get back in control. Borne then scored a ZigZag (landed a little awkwardly though) for a pinfall win.

NCAA Florida Gators football players who were seen chatting with Borne backstage last week celebrated with him after the bout.

Another video package from Darkstate aired, once again teasing that they’re going to strike again soon.

Referee malpractice gives Lainey Reid win

The next match of the night saw Lainey Reid take on Thea Hail. After appearances on NXT Level Up and LFG in the past, Reid made her NXT debut last month with a title match against Jacy Jayne.

Reid landed a devastating-looking shoulder breaker halfway through the match, getting her a two-count. Hail made a comeback and tried for the kimura submission, but Reid was able to escape. Reid took Hail down for a pin attempt and put her legs on the middle rope for elevation, although the referee caught it, causing a break.

Reid escaped a roll-up attempt from Hail, then knocked her down with a hard knee strike. Reid went for another pin attempt and grabbed the bottom rope while in the process. The referee didn’t see this, nor did he see that half of Hail’s body was under the bottom rope. This sequence gave Reid her first win on NXT TV.

Backstage, Charlie Dempsey told Tavion Heights that his loss last week to Je’Von Evans proved that he’s not ready to leave the NQCC yet. Heights asked for a match against Dempsey, where if he wins, he can leave the group. Dempsey agreed, but said Heights won’t get any more chances to fight out of the group after his next one.

Tatum Paxley wins in tag debut with Izzi Dame

Izzi Dame teamed with her newfound friend Tatum Paxley to take on Sol Ruca and Zaria in the next match.

Paxley had a nice crossbody into a pin attempt early in this one. Zaria and Ruca had a creative sequence before the break: Zaria lifted up Paxley, giving up her back to Ruca as a platform for a dive out of the ring and to the outside. Paxley was then tossed to the outside onto Paxley.

Zaria got isolated by the heel duo for a few minutes. She escaped their corner by avoiding a crossbody from Paxley by putting up her knees, then dodging a clothesline from Dame.

Ruca got a hot tag to take on both Paxley and Dame. Zaria got back into the match, setting up a double-team move that saw Ruca score a massive splash off the top. A pin attempt was broken by Paxley, who was taken out by Ruca at ringside right after.

Dame hit a codebreaker to escape a move from Zaria. She looked to her corner for a tag to Paxley, but she wasn’t there, as she was still wiped out by an attack from Ruca at ringside. Ruca got tagged in and started to attack Dame. She reversed a move from Dame into a backstabber.

Zaria tried for a spear onto Dame, but Paxley came into the ring and pushed her teammate out of the way. Instead, it was Ruca who got hit with the move. Dame scored a sitdown powerbomb for the pinfall win. It looks like Dame and Paxley have some chemistry as a duo.

Backstage after the match, NXT General Manager Ava told Dame that since she pinned Ruca, she’ll challenge for her Women’s North American Championship at Great American Bash.

Hank and Tank, who were attacked backstage recently, came up to The Culling with allegations that they were behind the assault. Ava booked an NXT Tag Team Championships bout between the two teams for next week.

Ricky Saints given pathway to Ethan Page rematch

Backstage, Ava had a meeting with Ethan Page and Ricky Saints. She called for a civil conversation between them, but Saints made it clear immediately that he wasn’t going to be civil. He called for a rematch for Page’s NXT North American Championship.

Page didn’t want to outright give him a shot. Instead, he had an idea: Face EVOLVE’s Vanity Project in a gauntlet match. If Saints gets past all three, then he could get a shot. Saints added that, if he wins, he gets to pick the stipulation for a rematch against Page. Ava liked this idea and made it official for next week.

A Chase University video package showed Andre Chase apologizing for his “tough love” way of trying to teach Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors. As a way to make amends, he said Dixon has a singles match next week. Dixon and Connors accepted his apology and acknowledged that he’s breaking his toxic patterns.

Joe Hendry thanked Mike Santana for saving him despite them being future opponents at Slammiversary. “We’re united when it comes to defending TNA against guys like Trick and High Ryze,” he said. However, he said he’s still going to beat him in their title match later this month.

It was announced that Hendry and Santana will take on High Ryze next week in a classic “Can they coexist?” match. Also, a contract signing for the Slammiversary main event will take place at the NXT Great American Bash.

Yoshiki Inamura books ticket to Great American Bash

The next challenger for NXT Champion Oba Femi was determined in the next match when Yoshiki Inamura and Jasper Troy faced off. It was shown that Inamura told Josh Briggs to stay backstage for the bout.

It was established early that this was a bout between two heavy hitters. Troy attempted to take out Inamura with a series of lariats, but the NOAH wrestler ate two before getting Troy down with a sidewalk slam.

Troy scored a series of standing frogsplashes onto Inamura as the match returned from a break. Inamura tried to get back into the match with a series of shoulder tackles off the ropes, but Troy reversed one of the moves into a Bossman Slam for a two-count.

Troy tried for another standing splash, but Inamura put up his knees to block the move. Inamura started to get his comeback for real this time. After throwing Troy into the turnbuckle twice, he slammed down the massive wrestler a pair of times – really impressive considering how much he was lifting here.

Inamura climbed to the top and hit his huge frogsplash, earning him a clean pinfall win. Inamura will take on Oba Femi at the Great American Bash next week.

After the match, Je’Von Evans appeared in the ring to take out Troy with a springboard cutter.

A quick rundown of next week’s NXT lineup was provided:

  • Hank & Tank vs. Shawn Spears & Niko Vance (NXT Tag Team Championships)
  • The Vanity Project vs. Ricky Saints (Three-on-One Gauntlet)
  • Mike Santana & Joe Hendry vs. Tyriek Igwe & Tyson Dupont
  • Charlie Dempsey vs. Tavion Heights (If Tavion Wins, He Can Leave NQCC)

Blake Monroe set for NXT TV debut at Great American Bash

The final segment of the night saw Jordynne Grace address fans.

Grace said that her win in the four-way #1 contenders match last week reminded her that she thrives under pressure. She then started to express something more vulnerable: “Do I really belong in the WWE?” Grace thought out loud.

Grace then said that when she beats Jacy Jayne at WWE Evolution for the NXT Women’s Championship, that’s when she’ll remind herself who she is and why she belongs in NXT.

Jayne herself interrupted Grace, saying the story was “pitiful.” She said that Grace would never be able to carry the division the way she has.

Jayne said that Grace and Blake Monroe are cut from the same cloth. “You think you can just walk up in here and everyone’s going to bow down at your feet,” Jayne said. “But luckily for you, Fatal Influence will always be here to remind you where you stand.”

Jayne was willing to keep going with her trash talk, but Grace interrupted, telling her to shut up.

“You shocked the world when you won the NXT Women’s Championship, but I’m not going to surprise anybody when I beat you,” Grace said.

Jayne suddenly tried to attack Grace, beginning a three-on-one attack by Fatal Influence. The aforementioned Monroe hit the ring to help even the odds. Monroe and Grace sent the heels retreating.

As the segment was coming to an end, GM Ava appeared on the stage. She announced that Fallon Henley and Jayne will team up to face Grace and Monroe at the Great American Bash. That’s a big addition to the upcoming PLE as the show comes to an end.
