Myles Borne overcomes Lexis King in physical ‘Lights Out’ match
This week’s NXT, a go-home episode ahead of No Mercy, took place at the show’s usual spot, The WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. Before we went to the live feed, we saw a recap of last week’s “Homecoming” episode at Full Sail University, a real collision of NXT’s past and present.
We were shown Oba Femi and Trick Williams arriving at the venue tonight, as they’ll likely be the main event in that title versus title spot. Seen stalking them in the parking lot were TNA’s Eric Young, Matt Cardona, and Moose… Foreshadowing a potential run-in later tonight, possibly.
The first match of the night saw the feud between Myles Borne and Lexis King continue with a “Lights Out” match. Borne got the jump on King, attacking the heel during his entrance. In a darker-than-usual setting, Borne remained in control during the early minutes. He got a two-count after scoring a belly-to-belly German Suplex onto a steel chair.
King avoided a chair shot by landing a thrust kick to the body. Borne’s head hit the chair on the way down, so it was even more effective than usual. Borne kicked out at two after also taking a suplex onto a chair.
King started to use a garbage can while Borne was seated in a corner of the ring, wailing away with shots to the head. Borne was able to reverse a move into a powerslam onto the garbage can before the show went to its first break.
The fight went to ringside during commercials, where King scored his Coronation neckbreaker onto the commentary desk. King took off his belt and whipped Borne around the ring just before the show returned.
King brought a SlimJim table in the ring and started to set it up, but this allowed enough time for Borne to take King’s belt and whip him over the back with it. Borne tried for a tope suicida dive to the outside, but was nailed with a belt shot to the head as he came flying through the ropes.
Borne sent King into a ringpost as they brawled at ringside, putting him head-first into a steel chair that was set up there. Moments later, King reversed an Irish Whip, sending Borne into a steel staircase. The crowd started to chant “This is awesome” over the total brawl that was taking place.
King wedged Borne’s head through a chair and attempted to stomp it, but Borne escaped. As he was limping due to the stomp, King was speared through a barricade. Borne whipped King with the belt at ringside, continuing with these shots as they got back into the ring. King avoided one of the whips, instead scoring a Superkick.
King attempted to suplex Borne off the base of a steel staircase and through a table, both of which he had set up in the ring. Instead, Borne scored a DDT onto the steel stairs. Following up on this, he connected with a Borne Again through the table, earning him a pinfall win in just under 12 minutes. Awesome opener from these two, full of eye-catching spots, really fun.
Backstage, we were informed that Ava is overseas and has thus handed her General Manager powers to Stevie Turner and Robert Stone tonight. Stone tried to ask if she had invited the TNA wrestlers seen around the venue, but Ava’s phone service cut out at this point. Speaking of TNA talents, Mance Warner and Steph De Lander were seen backstage briefly before the show went to a break.
Under disguise, Tavion Heights scores impromptu win against Ethan Page
The next segment of the night saw NXT North American Champion Ethan Page hit the ring for a promo. Just like last week, Worlds Collide opponent El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. was seen at ringside, or so we thought.
Page said that he planned on celebrating his recent victory over Tyler Breeze this week, but instead had his attention directed to Dr. Wagner Jr. He invited the AAA Latin American Champion to attend this weekend’s No Mercy, where he can watch Page embarrass Tavion Heights.
Dr. Wagner Jr. rose to his feet, causing Page to call for an impromptu match. They started to fight as a referee got into the ring, and, despite a bell not going off, it looked as though we had an official match here.
After mere seconds of fighting, Page tapped due to an Ankle Lock, causing the referee to call for the went. Dr. Wagner Jr. won! Well, soon we would realize there was actually a twist here. The wrestler peeled off his mask, and it was actually the aforementioned Heights who was fighting Page! Heading into their North American Championship this weekend, Heights has all the momentum.
Earlier in the day, Jordynne Grace was seen watching the latest disturbing vignette of Blake Monroe. Arianna Grace was overheard saying, “I’d be scared” about the new Monroe. When asked about comments from a few weeks ago, Arianna said that she wanted to make Monroe know that she’s not related to Jordan, despite them having the same last name.
Jordynne, bothered by Arianna’s comment, suggested they have a match tonight to show how different they are.
Lainey Reid to face Sol Ruca for women’s Speed title at No Mercy
The next match of the night saw Lainey Reid and Smackdown’s Candice LeRae face off in a WWE Speed match, with the winner facing Speed Women’s Champion Sol Ruca at No Mercy this weekend. For those who need a refresher, non-title Speed matches are three minutes long. NASCAR’s Cole Custer served as a special guest ring announcer for this match (The CW has rights to NASCAR’s Xfinity races).
LeRae hit a senton in the first seconds and tried for a springboard moonsault, but Reid dodged the move. The match went to the ring apron just a minute in, where LeRae teased a German Suplex to the floor. Reid avoided the move, but was thrown face-first onto the apron moments later.
LeRae came flying off the ropes and to the outside with a crossbody as the match reached the halfway mark. Back in the ring, she transitioned into a crossface, but Reid escaped the move with a pin attempt.
Reid and LeRae traded roll-up pin attempts, a series which came to a sudden end after Reid scored a nasty knee to the head. The strike gave Reid the pinfall win in two-and-a-half minutes, earning her a shot this weekend against Ruca. This also means LeRae won’t get a chance to become the first-ever two-time Speed women’s champ.
TNA Wrestling’s Xia Brookside and Lei Ying Lee were seen arriving at the venue during the match.
Jaida Parker said in a promo that her rivalry with Lash Legend isn’t over “by a long shot.”
Backstage, Lyra Valkyria was seen talking to Tatum Paxley. A chat between them was cut off by Izzi Dame, who told Paxley that she was left by Valkyria once before, hence why she shouldn’t trust her again. Steve Maclin was seen backstage during this chat.
Jordynne Grace, Blake Monroe to meet in a steel cage this weekend
Chase U was seen chatting with NASCAR drivers Sam Mayer and Cole Custer backstage. Mayer teased how much he loves the “Say his name and he appears” Joe Hendry routine, eventually revealing that Hendry was actually the person in Cole Custer’s outfit, not Custer. DarkState, who were in the room and harassing Mayer moments earlier, called for a six-man tag match against Chase U’s Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors with Hendry. Sounds like that’ll be tonight, too.
In a match that was made backstage earlier in the night, Jordynne Grace faced Arianna Grace.
Arianna attacked Jordynne before the bell, attempting to get an upper hand in the fight. While this bout had some back and forth, it was short and clear the entire time who was going to prevail. Jordynne hit a Spinebuster, then a powerbomb the pinfall win in two minutes. Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo was seen consoling Arianna at ringside afterward.
Following Jordynne’s win, Blake Monroe made her way to the ring. Wielding a pink kendo stick, Monroe traded blows with Jordynne, who had a steel chair. A brawl between the two was broken up by a roster of referees. After the fight was brought to a halt, it was announced by interim NXT General Managers Stevie Turner and Robert Stone that Monroe and Grace can finish their rivalry at No Mercy this weekend in a steel cage, weapons match.
Fatal Influence’s Jacy Jayne was seen telling the rest of Fatal Influence that she can “handle” Lola Vice by herself tonight, leaving them backstage for her face-to-face segment in the ring.
Lola Vice vows to knock out Jacy Jayne at No Mercy
Ahead of their title match this weekend at No Mercy, NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne and Lola Vice faced off in the ring.
Jayne came to the ring first, telling fans to pretend that last week’s loss at Homecoming didn’t happen. “Truth be told, none of that really matters. End of the day, whether you people like it or not, for over 100 days I have been standing in your face as the NXT Women’s Champion.”
Jayne called it a “fantasy” that Vice, of all people, would dethrone her. “A crossover act pretending to be a wrestler in my division,” Jayne said about Vice.
Vice eventually came out to tell her side of the story. “100 days as champ,” Vice said. “Wow, that’s impressive! But you’re barely surviving. You’ve always needed somebody. I don’t.”
A year removed from her title shot against Roxanne Perez at Heatwave, Vice said how she has changed. She’s no longer just a fighter, she’s a professional wrestler, she said.
“I’m so glad it’s called No Mercy because that’s exactly what I will show you when I knock you out and become NXT Champion,” Vice said.
Jayne admitted that she’ll likely take a beating this weekend, but remains confident that “somehow, some way” she’ll find the win. Trying to anger Vice, Jayne said that the challenger this weekend will realize that all the sacrifices her family made were for nothing.
Vice dropped Jayne with a spinning backfist, then hoisted up the NXT Women’s Championship as the segment came to an end.
DarkState take down Chase U & Joe Hendry
In a vignette, Josh Briggs talked about how he doesn’t care about approval from fans. “Chant all you want. The only chant I care about is one, two, three.” He’s facing Je’Von Evans this weekend at No Mercy.
In a matchup made backstage earlier in the episode, Joe Hendry teamed with Chase U’s Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors to face DarkState’s Dion Lennox, Saquon Shugars and Osiris Griffin.
Despite getting jumped before the bell, Chase U and Hendry had the advantage before the break. Dixon came over the top with a dive onto Shugars and Lennox just as the show went to commercials.
DarkState had control of the match as the show returned, as Dixon spent minutes isolated in the heel corner of the ring.
Hendry finally got a hot tag, taking on all three DarkState members in the ring. He sent the towering Griffin out of the ring with a hurricanrana, then caught Lennox for a fallaway slam.
Hendry started to set up for the Standing Ovation finisher to Lennox, but was stopped by Griffin, who came back into the ring and dropped the TNA star. Griffin tried for a move, but Hendry reversed it into a suplex. Hendry started looking toward his corner for a tag, but nobody was there.
Andre Chase peeled Connnors off the floor and got him onto the ring apron, firing him up for a hot tag. Connors found the energy to get back into this match on a roll, including a dive to take out Cutler James at ringside.
Connors scored a stunner on Lennox in the ring, but James climbed onto the ring apron to distract the referee from counting a pin attempt. Shugars landed a knee to the head of Connors while the referee was still looking away. DarkState then put together a triple powerbomb on Connors for the pinfall win in 11 minutes.
Mike Santana joined the list of TNA talents arriving at the venue, as it was shown during this match that he was walking into the building.
Jazmyn Nyx suffers backstage attack
A mini-doc aired about Ricky Saints and his upbringing in New Orleans. He said that no matter if he’s facing Oba Femi or Ricky Saints this weekend, his performance is “about making all the non-believers into believers.”
An interview with Je’Von Evans was cut off by Jazmyn Nyx getting attacked backstage – we didn’t see who did it. Jacy Jayne told Fallon Henley that it was time to drop her from Fatal Influence anyway: “Only the strong survive.”
The broadcast did a quick rundown of No Mercy:
- Oba Femi OR Trick Williams vs. Ricky Saints (NXT Championship)
- Jacy Jayne vs. Lola Vice (NXT Women’s Championship)
- Ethan Page vs. Tavion Heights (NXT North American Championship)
- Sol Ruca vs. Lainey Reid (WWE Speed Women’s Championship)
- Josh Briggs vs. Je’Von Evans
- Jordynne Grace vs. Blake Monroe (Weaponized Steel Cage)
TNA vs. NXT brawl closes out show, causes Winner Take All match to get thrown out
A high-stakes matchup closed the night, as Oba Femi and Trick Williams wagered their titles in a Winner Take All match. Whoever walked out of Tuesday’s main event on top would not only be the NXT Champion, but also the TNA World Champion.
As expected, considering the numerous TNA cameos earlier in the night, many talents from the brand were seen watching the match from the crowd.
Williams tried to land a Trick Kick just after the match started, but Femi was able to block the move. Femi sent Williams out of the ring a minute in. While he wasn’t able to score a chokeslam onto the ring apron, Femi dropped Williams with a loud chop to the chest. A huge focus early in this match was put on the TNA cameos at ringside, repeatedly cutting away to show others.
Williams dropped Femi face-first onto the ring apron. It was at this point that Mike Santana hopped a guardrail and went face-to-face with Williams briefly. He joined the commentary team for the final 10 minutes of the show.
An appearance from Matt Cardona received a large reaction from the crowd just after the show returned from its last break. Santana explained that the roster was present because they didn’t like how NXT made a TNA title match without consulting them.
Femi scored a near fall after a series of moves, including a hard flying uppercut. Williams escaped a move from the NXT champ, then scored a trio of Trick Kicks, earning him a near fall.
Femi tossed Williams across the ring and then tried for a Fall From Grace, but Williams reversed the move for a roll-up pin attempt. Williams got back to his feet and hit a Trickshot knee to the head, but it wasn’t enough for him to end the bout.
Williams picked up Femi, but right as the NXT champ got back up to his feet, he connected with his Fall From Grace finisher. Williams kicked out at two.
The fight went to the ringside, where Femi was sent into a steel staircase. Williams went up to Santana once again and slapped the TNA talent in the face. Santana wasn’t going to just let that happen – he slapped Williams back, causing the referee to throw out the title match.
Everybody representing TNA at ringside was waiting for their cue to cause madness all night, and at this moment they finally got it. Right after that slap, a huge brawl broke out. Dozens from both the NXT and TNA roster, men and women, all hit the ring for one big brawl. As this all happened, Ricky Saints and Femi went face to face, as they’ll be meeting for the top NXT men’s belt this weekend.
