McAfee wanted the match and it was sanctioned.

GUNTHER lost his WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41 and on the Raw after WrestleMania, Michael Cole and Pat McAfee made comments about GUNTHER tapping out to Uso in their title match.

GUNTHER made his way over to the commentary desk and confronted them both. This ultimately led to GUNTHER putting Cole in a sleeper hold. McAfee attempted to make the save, but GUNTHER put him in a sleeper and choked him out.

McAfee addressed what occurred while on the 4/28 Raw. He asked SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to come out to the stage area as Aldis filled in for Raw General Manager Adam Pearce. McAfee asked Aldis to lift GUNTHER’s suspension so they can fight. Aldis shared that he already spoke to Pearce about it and the match is going to take place at Backlash. It’ll be McAfee’s first singles match since WrestleMania 39 where he defeated The Miz.

Here’s the updated lineup for Backlash on May 10th:

  • Undisputed WWE Championship: John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton
  • WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Lyra Valkyria (c) vs. Becky Lynch
  • GUNTHER vs. Pat McAfee
