Full Circle Already?!

One year. ONE FULL YEAR! This Sunday, I celebrate my one year anniversary with POST Wrestling. Up until that point, I had only dropped by a couple episodes of POST Puroresu with WH.  This time last year, I experienced my first Stardom Five Star Grand Prix, culminating in my ugly crying over Syuri’s barn burner of a match against Takumi Iroha and her monumental win over Momo Watanabe in the same night, followed by her heartbreaking victory speech, where she openly discussed the passing of her mother. Let’s start with a review of my classes as the Homeroom Teacher of Stardom!

Non-Stardom Event Coverage (1/2022~) – I am very thankful that I’ve been allowed to branch out from Stardom coverage and help share my love for the Japanese wrestling scene, including covering passion projects like the Hana Kimura Memorial Show and branching out beyond Stardom. With TJPW’s growing presence, especially with crossover with AEW, I finally asked if I could add TJPW’s big shows to my coverage queue. The continued support for DSW really made this possible and I have truly enjoyed learning more about TJPW.

Dream Slam Weekly – Volume 1 (4/30/22~)  DSW has been one of my biggest challenges and passion projects since joining POST only because it has shown me how deep the scope of the Japanese women’s wrestling scene is as well as how far reaching the international independent scene is and how ever ring seems to be connected regardless of continent! I was in disbelief when it was first offered to me, but with this volume, it’s been twenty-two weeks of deep dives and lamenting on how much amazing wrestling is available out there!

It definitely makes my bucket list for my next trip to Japan rather long because after over five months of coverage, I want to clone myself and go watch all the promotions! Stardom shows like Stardom in Showcase and the remainder of the New Blood series were moved to this format with mini-reviews. Additionally, if there are shows I get to do mini-reviews for, this is the place!

In Volume 19, I finally took a stab at designing a logo for the column. I can’t thank Wai enough for helping me make it simple, but unique from the rest of POST’s branding. I’m also grateful to John for allowing me to make it a visual buffet and akin to my event reports, where I can include my thoughts, some translations, and fun news tidbits. Plus, if I haven’t said it before, a sincere 20 seconds of continuous, meaningful eye contact (see this week’s MCU L8R She-Hulk episode) to WH for helping me decide on a fun title for the column because I truly had a tough time making up my mind.

I cannot thank POST, especially John and Wai for taking a chance on me last autumn. I know this week’s opening might be a bit long, but I wanted to take a moment to review my first full year at post… well 363.5 DAYS (since this is live the morning before the calendar day)! What started as event reports for my favorite women’s promotion, Stardom, has evolved into the development and further cultivation of confidence as a writer and content creator. I’ve learned many things in the last year, so I would be remiss if I didn’t take a beat to look back and express my gratitude to the entire POST Family. I’m here because of your support. 

With an exceptionally full and happy heart, I am thrilled to see where the next year at POST takes me… well… besides to Royal Quest 2 NEXT WEEKEND in LONDON!! Fingers crossed that the impending tropical depression nine, doesn’t turn my plans into a wash by next  week! I appreciate everything and everyone who has pulled up a seat on my Joshi Learning Excursion, and I can’t wait to share more adventures with you in the future.

Ayame Sasamura has been busy working in many places. Many might be familiar with 2AW which rebranded from the Kaientai Dojo several years back. One of their more notable younger wrestlers, Ayato Yoshida, had a brief stint in NJPW as a Young Lion before returning to his home promotion. Ayame is one of the only women in the promotion, which is why you see her in multiple promotions including Sendai Girls, Marvelous, SEAdLINNNG, WAVE.

UPDATE! Due to the weather conditions due to the passing typhoon, the outdoor wrestling plans for Fiesta Mexicana have been canceled at the venue. There is still the possibility of the entire outdoor event in Odaiba being canceled due to inclement weather. However, the scheduled co-promoted show between CMLL and Ice Ribbon will be located off-site at the Ice Ribbon Dojo in Saitama. Talent may attend the other days in a promotional capacity. Tickets will be available for 3,000 yen (roughly $25) with open seating.

Special Tournament Rule Set

  • Every match has a 15-minute time limit and is scheduled for one fall.
  • In the event of a time limit draw, the match will continue until the member of either team wins by a two count.
  • Any wrestler who debuted before 2017 cannot tag with another person who debuted before 2017.
  • Each team must have one member who debuted in 2018 (or later).
  • Teams can only be formed at the request from a wrestler with a shorter professional career

AEW Fight Forever at Tokyo Game Show 2022

The first time I can remember wrestling and video games going hand-in-hand with one another was when Kenny Omega collaborated with Alex Jebailey to bring NJPW to the CEO Fighting Game Tournament in Daytona Beach in 2018. They would have a repeat performance a year later with AEW in the emergency of Fyter Fest in summer 2019.

With the upcoming release of AEW’s Fight Forever, the company worked with THQ Nordic Japan to bring wrestling to the Tokyo Game Show, arguably one of the largest and most crucial video game conventions in the world. The showcase featured AEW talents like Christopher Daniels and Michael Nakazawa and familiar in-ring regulars like Yuka Sakazaki, Ryo Mizunami, Riho and Konosuke Takeshita. Working with their partners DDT & TJPW, wrestlers like Chris Brookes (DDT), Hikari Noa (TJPW), Yuki Ueno (DDT) and Hagane Shinno (Freelancer)

Homework: Weekly Match Selection

I’m back from New Jersey with something a bit more fun. I’ve noticed that many of my matches have been rather serious, gritty, hard-hitting selections, so this week, I wanted to provide something a little more refreshing. Back in July, Ice Ribbon participated in a local food festival in Saitama Prefecture (where the IR Dojo is located). They had an exhibition area where they introduced the locals to a little bit of what life as an Ice Ribbon wrestler is like. Tsukasa Fujimoto emceed the event and was assisted by Ibuki Hoshi, Nao Ishikawa, Saran and Asahi. 

Near the event stage, they held a mini-pro wrestling class where children got to practice tumbling and simple gymnastics while supervised by the wrestlers and their parents. There was also a special, roaming, falls count anywhere in the festival match between Ibuki Hoshi (age 19) and Saran (age 13). I really like that the younger wrestlers really got into the mood, showing other children how much fun (yes, even when properly supervised) wrestling can be! They event demonstrated some chops and stage dives!

Even Saran feigned anger with Tsukasa when she asked for “one more chop” during the demonstration! Their participation in the event was also to promote one of their shows during the summer time. Nao Ishikawa also performed one of her songs, “Unlock” as she is also a wrestling idol! She’s one of the members of KISSmeT Princess, who perform at Ice Ribbon’s Princess Parties! At the time, she was out with an injury, but at this event, she announced her return to action at the July 31st Korakuen Hall show! She and Asahi didn’t get to have a proper match at the event, but they did throw some elbows and throw one another off the stage before the show ended.

I know this isn’t the usual weekly match selection, but with all the talks about Japan opening back up to international tourism, it’s just a shame that we missed out on so much fun over the summer time! This is just another reason I start saving up for next summer!
