REPORT: Rey Mysterio dealing with lower body injury, originally scheduled for World Cup

Rey Mysterio is dealing with an injury, which removed him from the World Cup tournament on SmackDown.

Ringside News was the first to report the news of a “short-term injury” with Mysterio backstage at SmackDown this past Friday in a walking boot. The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer added the injury is an ankle or foot injury and that Mustafa Ali replaced Mysterio in the World Cup tournament.

A source confirmed the story to POST Wrestling noting that hopefully, the performer is not out too long, and confirmed Mysterio had a walking boot on.

The World Cup tournament kicked off this past Friday with Santos Escobar and Braun Strowman advancing in the eight-man tournament. The remaining matches in the opening round will take place this Friday with Mustafa Ali vs. Ricochet and Sami Zayn vs. Butch. The winner will receive a shot at Gunther for the Intercontinental title.
